What Is It
Here are some reading strategies that will help you improve your comprehension skills:
1. Skimming
Skimming means quick reading of the text to get only its main idea. To skim
effectively, you need to read only a part of the material.
Example:
Read only the first sentence. “Drop down” to the end, looking for key details

Dogs are often a problem at home. Many dogs are noisy

and dirty. They may even be dangerous for small children.

Does this writer like dogs at home? No!

You do not need to read all the sentences to learn this. You only have to read the
words “problem”, “noisy”, dirty”, and “dangerous”. From those words, you can tell
the writer’s point of view. This writer is against dogs at home.
https://ielts-up.com/reading/skimming-scanning.html
2. Scanning
Scanning means searching for specific phrases in the text to answer some questions. The
questions on a Reading test often include dates, names, numbers, new terms or other key words.
So it’s a very good idea to underline those key words while reading, so you could find the answers
in the text more easily.

Example:
Scanning the table of contents of a book

https://ielts-up.com/reading/skimming-scanning.html
3. Intensive Reading
To read intensively is to completely deconstruct (analyze) a text, with the goal of
absorbing as much meaning from it as possible. This is done by taking a text, and
systematically (thoroughly) looking up every word, phrase, or collocation that you do not
understand. This activity requires great mental effort and focus. Because of this, the
learner who engages in intensive reading must be careful to follow specific guidelines, or
else risk dullness and stress (burnout). If you wish to read a text intensively, you must take
care to read texts that are interesting and short, to read only for brief periods of time, and
to do so when you have the most mental energy.

Extensive Reading
To read extensively is to simply read as much as possible, without concerning
oneself with the meaning of the unknown word. Extensive reading is meant to be a fun and
pleasurable experience, requiring a low expenditure of mental effort. The more extensive
reading you do, the more language you are exposed to, allowing you to increase your
passive knowledge of vocabulary quite quickly. Specifically,

What I Can Do
Activity: COVID-19 Response
In this part of the module, you have to put all the significant learning in the lesson.
Now you have to read carefully the passage “Why is Hand Washing So Important?” as one of the
means for the kids and families to be away from Corona Virus, and answer the questions that
follow.

Why Is Hand Washing So Important?

https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/hand-washing.html

Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses —from
the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, flu, hepatitis A, and
many types of diarrhea.
It's a message worth repeating — hand washing is by far the best way to keep you from
getting sick and prevent the spread of germs. Here's how to scrub those germs away.
Demonstrate or show — or better yet, wash your hands together often so you learn how important
this good habit is. First, wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Make sure the
water isn't too hot for little hands. Second, use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds.
Antibacterial soap isn't a must — any soap will do. Third, make sure you get in between your
fingers, on the backs of hands, and under the nails where germs like to hang out. And don't forget
the wrists.
Finally, rinse and dry well with a clean towel. When you come into contact with germs, you
can become infected just by touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. And once you're infected, it's
usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness.

Questions:
1. Name three diseases that are resisted by washing hands?
2. What is the best way to prevent Covid-19?
3. Is antibacterial soap necessary to fight disease?
4. Which part of the hands are the two best places for germs to hang out?
5. What is the recommended time duration for washing hands in this article?

The Ant and the Grasshopper

One summer afternoon, a Grasshopper was hopping about in a field. He was
singing merrily and enjoying the day. On his way, he met an Ant who was struggling to
take a grain of corn to his nest. The Grasshopper was a lazy fellow. He thought he had
nothing to do. So, when he saw the Ant, he said, “Why don’t you come and chat with
me instead of toiling so hard? We will have a great time!”
“I am trying to collect and store food for the winter. I can’t waste time being idle. I
think you should start saving food for winter too,” said the Ant. The Grasshopper
yawned and said. “Winter is too far away. There is plenty of time. Why worry about it
today when I have more than enough to eat!” But the Ant went on his way and
continued to work hard. Days passed, then months. The Grasshopper enjoyed himself
and the Ant collected enough food for the winter.
When the winter came, the leaves had fallen and the grass was dry. The
Grasshopper had nothing to eat. It started to snow and he had nowhere to go. He thought
he would die of hunger and cold. On the other hand, the Ant was enjoying the fruits of his
hard work. He had a nice and cozy home and plenty to7eat.
