Let’s Talk!
Teacher: Today’s class is going to be about self-reflection. I want you all
to think about your personal strengths and weaknesses. Would
anyone like to share theirs with the rest of the class?

Danielle: Yes. My biggest strength is my ability to get along well with

others. My biggest weakness is Mathematics. It’s very difficult for
me.

Teacher: Thank you for sharing Danielle. Who else wants to share?

Timothy: My biggest strength is problem solving. I’m great at finding

solutions to problems. My biggest weakness is verbal expression.
Sometimes it’s hard for me to put my thoughts and feelings into
words.

Teacher: Thank you, Timothy. It’s important to remember that everyone

is unique. Everyone has their strong points and their weak points. I
want you to think about how you can improve your weaknesses.

Let’s Talk! - Advanced
Josh: What’s wrong Lila?

Lila: I got a D in English. My mom is going to be livid. I’m in such hot

water!

Josh: Okay, just calm down. Why did you get a D, Lila? You’re the
sharpest person in the class. I don’t even see how this is possible.

Lila: I didn’t turn in all of my homework on time. The teacher takes off a
lot of points for late work. I’ve always been a procrastinator.

Josh: Lila, everyone has their idiosyncrasies and you are not the only
person who procrastinates. However, that doesn’t make you a
victim of your habits.

Lila: I think that you are right. I’ve got to take more control of my life
and be more responsible. I’ll just have to go home and face the
music.

Josh: Exactly. Copyright (c) 2010 Open English (FoxyP2 Inc.) All rights reserved.

Reading Comprehension – Advanced
Almost everyday we describe and assess the personalities of people around us.
Whether we realize it or not, these daily musings on how and why people behave as
they do are similar to what personality psychologists do.

While there are many different theories of personality, one must understand exactly
what is meant by the term personality. A brief definition would be that personality is
made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that make
a person unique. In addition to this, personality arises from within the individual and
remains fairly consistent throughout life.

Type theories are the earliest perspectives on personality. These theories suggest
that there are a limited number of "personality types" which are related to biological
influences.

Psychodynamic theories of personality are heavily influenced by the work of

Sigmund Freud, and emphasize the influence of the unconscious on personality.

Behavioral theories suggest that personality is the result of interaction between an

individual and his environment.

around us on a regular basis, even if we don’t realize it. What do you think about
this statement?

• The article tells us that one’s personality continues to be fairly consistent throughout
his or her lifetime. Many people would argue with this statement saying that people
can and do change their personalities. Which idea do you most agree with? Why?

• The text provides us with a brief definition for the word “personality”. Using your
own words, describe what “personality” means to you.

• The article briefly describes three types of personality theories: Type theories,
Psychodynamic theories and Behavioral theories. Which of these theories do you
most agree with? Why?
