Let’s Talk!
Frank: Hey John, did you register for classes yet?
John: I really want to take the communication class, but I don’t know if it will be
available.
John: Yeah. I tried to get in last semester, but it was full by the time I registered.
John: I’m supposed to take English 201, but I really don’t want to because I
dislike writing.
Frank: I had that class last year and you’re right, it does require a lot of writing.
But it really wasn’t that bad.
John: Really? Maybe I should go ahead and take it this semester then.

Reading Comprehension – Advanced
“Stay in school.” It's a refrain we’ve heard time and time again. When the going gets tough we’re
supposed to keep going anyway. These are supposed to be words of encouragement when a
student feels like they are in a college nightmare.
Some of us completed an advanced degree program while others made it to college, only to leave
before earning that magic diploma. Listed here are the top reasons that students drop out of college.
Financial reasons-With almost every degree comes at least a decade of financial misery. Every kid is
entitled to a quality college education, but sometimes finding the money to get that education isn’t
easy. For many, the choice is either to sign their life away to student loans, or pack their bags and
head home for cheaper pastures.
Academic failure-It’s tough finding out there’s more to college than keggers and football games. For
many kids, high school was easy to blow off. Kids who could coast through high school sometimes
hit college and are unprepared for the effort they need to put in to succeed.
Family problems-Sometimes college is about making tough choices. Sadly, the world doesn’t stop
just because college starts. There are times when the personal life of a student will interfere with
their ability to finish a semester. Whether it is a loved one falling ill, or a parent’s loss of a job that
forces a kid into the work force, there are times when college has to be put on hold.
Too much partying-College can be a fun time for a kid. For some, it’s about experimentation and self-
discovery. For others, it’s about putting their liver through the ringer. It’s hard to make the Dean’s List
when they can’t wake up for their noon class. Kids who party too hard don’t study enough, and that
kind of routine catches up with them quickly. Copyright (c) 2010 Open English (FoxyP2 Inc.) All rights reserved.

focused on college?
