Reading Comprehension – Advanced
February 14th is Valentine's Day. . It originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a
Catholic bishop. Today, it is celebrated with the giving of candy, flowers, and other gifts.

Eight-hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had established a
celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage. The celebration featured a
lottery in which young men would draw the names of young girls from a box. The girl, whose name
each young man drew, would be his companion for the rest of the year.

In an effort to do away with this, Pope Gelasius ordered a change. Instead of drawing the names of
young women, the box would contain the names of saints. Both men and women were allowed to
draw from the box. They were then supposed so emulate the actions of the saint for the rest of the
year.

The Church decided that it needed to find a saint of love to be honored during Valentine’s Day. They
found an appropriate choice in Saint Valentine who had lived during the rule of Claudius.

Claudius believed that married men made poor soldiers, so he banned marriage in his empire. But
Saint Valentine would secretly marry young men that came to him. When Claudius found out what he
was doing he became furious and imprisoned him.

While in prison, Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. It is said that his love and
great faith miraculously restored her sight. Before he was executed, he wrote a farewell message to
her signed, "From your Valentine." This phrase has been used on Valentine’s Day ever since.
