black hair with deep blue eyes. You’ve got high cheekbones and an olive
complexion.

Helen: Okay, that sounds about right. What about my body type? I can choose
from: petite, average, muscular/athletic and large-framed.

Jackie: That’s a tough call. I think that you’re between petite and average.

Reading Comprehension – Advanced
Physical appearance is a significant factor in determining how an individual is
perceived in society. It is often used to determine one’s level of attractiveness.
Recent studies show that it is instrumental in maintaining relationships, forming new
ones, getting a job, inspiring confidence or other feelings of either positivity or
negativity.

Physical appearance is an amalgamation of special features or qualities that confer

superiority, distinction, merit, perfection, virtue, and beauty to a person. While
Joseph Addison may have stated that nothing makes its way more directly to the
soul than beauty, modern day thinkers believe that physical appearance has taken a
new stand in this regard. It has become an important criterion for deciding the
direction of an individual’s life.

Psychologists have discovered that physical appearance has a remarkable impact

on how an individual sees himself or herself, as well as how the individual is treated
in society. Not surprisingly, an individual’s personality is greatly affected by how they
are treated. This generally results in an increase or decrease of overall feelings of
self-worth.
