I. Answer the following comprehensively.

1. Give the different categories that national artists can win.

They can win in category of music, dance, film and broadcasting art, literature, theater, visual
arts, and architecture art.

2. What can you say about the criteria in winning a National Artist?

For me, it is very long process for you to win as a national artist like you need 10years for you to
become Filipino citizen. There are many requirements for you to able to join or become as national artist
which is if you are determine to become a national artist you are willing to be one of the criteria in
winning for this title. Also having a heart for this title and for what you are doing will give you a chance
to become national artist.

3. If you will be given a chance to change the criteria for national artists, what will it be? Why do you
want to change it?

If I have a chance to change one of the criteria for national artist, which is I want to change the
year to become one of the Filipino citizen. I want to make it short like 8 years because for me 8 years will
be okay to become Filipino citizen. I hope that even 8 years of living here in Philippines you will be
candidate for national artist. Also I hope that it won’t be a barrier for us/others to become national artist.

II. Choose one Philippine artist for each field or category. Search for his/her biography (experiences
before he/she became a National Artist). Then, reflect on his/her experiences in life. You can relate it to
yours, your realizations in life, and lessons you got from his/her experiences.

Bonifacio became a Fulbright

scholar in 1956 and obtained her
Master of Arts degree in Speech
and Drama at the University of
Wisconsin in 1958. She wrote her
first play, “Sepang Loca,” in 1957
and followed this up with
“Rooms” the following year. Both
works won awards in the
Wisconsin Playwrighting
Competition and were staged at
the UW Play Circle Theater, with
the author herself designing
“Sepang Loca.” The two plays
were later published in literary
journals in the United States.

During those times, the young

Asian Fulbright scholar was told
by one of her American
professors that her one-act play
had 18 characters, far too
numerous for the standard
format of that time. Her material
also delved into abortion, which
was barely spoken of in the
1950s. The young Amelia replied
that in her milieu, Asian plays did
tend to have a lot of characters,
regardless of the running time.
Not long after, the professor
apologized to her privately for
not assessing her play correctly.

Her research into traditional

theatre of the Philippines was
supported by the University of
the Philippines' Office of
Research Coordination, Zarzuela
Foundation of the Philippines,

medium of communication of his
characters. He pioneered
animated cartoons for television

and Caltex in 1965. His campaign
for the advancement of
illustration and commercial art in
the Philippines resulted to the
establishment of the Visual

the UP College of Fine Arts.

In 1997, the Philippine Board on

Books for Young People (PBBY)
granted him the title Dean of
Filipino Cartoonists, an
achievement award for his
lifetime dedication to the art of
capturing humor in the character
and everyday life in
the Philippines. In 1991, he
promoted the formation of a
group of young children's book

All in all, he made over

500 cartoon characters,
twenty comic strips, six movies,
two murals, and 15,000
