Pau: Last time, they discussed the aspect of culture being dynamic, flexible, and adaptive. Sa lesson
naman na ito we will further elaborate how culture survives and is transmitted from the past
generations to the next.

Transmission of Culture through Socialization

Pau: Culture is described as something that is learned by being a member of society. Unlike sa
system of formal education, where a teacher conducts lectures to transfer knowledge to the
student, society teaches its members the different ways of life through other means. And with that,
Culture can be acquired through Socialization and Enculturation.

Ritzie: Eh ano naman meaning ng Socialization and Enculturation?

Pau: Good question, Ritzie. Socialization or enculturation is the process of passing culture from one
generation to the next. Through socialization, yung mga members ng society, they learn the behavior
that is acceptable to the society where he/she belongs. In this stage, the individuals internalize the
values and beliefs prescribed by society.

Mika: On the other hand, is the acculturation. Ano nga ba ang ibig sabihin nito? Acculturation is
For example. yung mga Overseas Filipino
nagwowork abroad. Tulad na lang sa Japan (EXAMPLE)

Remember that culture of a society survives from one generation to the next generation through
Socialization.
society by following the standard behavior na natutunan mo from different agents of socialization.
Wait, ano nga ba ang mga differents agents of socialization? Ritzie alam mo ba?

Agents of Socialization

Let’s begin. So the different agents of
Socialization present in society are responsible for teaching its members how to act appropriately.
These agents usually come in the form of social institutions. Ano nga ba ang meaning ng social
institution?

Social institutions are semi-permanent relationships in society that endure long periods. Number one
An individual is first
introduced to right and wrong actions, starting from birth and childhood. Yung mga Parents yung
biggest influence ng child’s belief and values. This is especially the case in the family-oriented
culture of Filipinos, which makes the family a primary consideration even up to adulthood.

Educational institutions are the formal teaching of good manners and conduct na nangyayari sa loob
ng school, from pre-school until college level.
Other examples of agents of socialization are one’s peers, the mass
media, and religion.

Jao: The agents of socialization are essential parts of human life. As a member of society,
socialization guides behavior even without the presence of others. Ang mga individuals na hindi
nagu-undergo sa socialization process are called the feral child

Come stop your crying

It will be alright
Just take my hand
Hold it tight

animals raised him in the jungle. As a result, he is not able to speak and behave like a cultured
human being. Instead, his actions are much like that of the animals. Dito pinapakita na most of the
human behavior is nurtured and learned.

Pau: *History Maker*

One of the earliest records of a feral child in the English language is the story of John of Liege.
A tale of a boy who was said to have spent his youth alone in the Belgian wilderness. Accounts made
by Sir Kenelm Digby in 1644, John fled to the forest at a young age to escape enemy soldiers but
never returned to the village after the war ended. He lived alone in the woods for 16 years by
foraging for berries and roots. At around age 21, he was found naked, trying to steal food from a
farm. He was said to have developed a heightened sense of smell and have forgotten the use of
language. After being reintegrated back to society, John was eventually able to learn how to speak
again.
Mika: So guys, alam niyo na ang Transmission of Culture through Socialization and Agents of
Socialization. We will have a game para macheck namin if nakinig nga ba kayo sa mga diniscuss
namin.

o kakanta. Ok mag start na tayo sa game

Lesson 4: Aspects of Culture and Society III (Patterned Social Interactions, Integrated and at
Times Unstable, Requires Language and Other Forms of Communication)

Pau: Now, Let’s move on to the next lesson, which is Aspects of Culture and Society III (Patterned
Social Interactions, Integrated and at Times Unstable, Requires Language and Other Forms of
Communication)

*MC JAO* (lagyan ng accent and action while speaking)

Patterns of Social Interaction

Mika: Society and culture are developed through patterns of interaction. Why? Because Within
groups, the constant exchange of its members creates patterns of behavior. Yung mga patterns of
behavior can develop relationships, and belongingness to the group is achieved by sharing these
behavior patterns.
Sabi nga nila ang Culture is defined as a complex whole, composed of the many things people learn
by belonging to a society.
behavior. Yung mga patterns na ito ay nakikita sa mga arts, beliefs, values, and may other facets
mentioned in the previous lessons.

Culture as Unstable and Contested

Ritzie: Paano nga ba nagiging unstable and contested ang culture?

Since alam natin na ang culture is susceptible to change o nagbabago it is at times unstable and
contested. Sabi nga sa mga previous lessons, certain groups in society may hold subcultures that may
reject the predominant culture.

At times, the development of non-material culture, such as beliefs and norms, may not catch up with
the development of material culture. To help ensure that culture remains stable and integrated,
language plays a vital role. Ano nga ba ang Languange, Pau?

Pau: Language is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a systematic means of communicating ideas or

feelings by the use of conventionalized signs, sounds, gestures, or marks having understood
meanings.”

In contrast sa usual conception ng language, naginagamit lang ito for speaking, language also
includes signs, symbols, and gestures with attached meanings shared by society. Through constant
communication and interaction, people have agreed to behave in similar ways and eventually
developed patterns of behavior. With language, yung society tinuturuan niya na yung mga members
nito on how to behave through verbal instructions, body language, or written rules. For instance,
Filipinos nod their heads when greeting somebody on the street instead of saying hello. This
contrasts with the Korean custom of bowing their head.

Carla: Language also plays an essential role in the transmission of culture. Language is at the core of
this process since it is how people communicate with each other. Daniel Everett called language a
cultural tool, an aid to get things done.

Ritzie: Daniel Everett is an American linguist and anthropologist who is well-known for studying the
Pirahã people of the Brazilian Amazon jungle. He also served as a professor of linguistics and
anthropology at various universities. He has written multiple books on language, including Language:
The Cultural Tool, which discusses his theory that language is not inborn but a tool developed by
humans to solve their problems.

Jao: Remember, Language is comprised of signs, symbols, and gestures with attached meanings the
members of society share. These meanings may differ from one culture to the next.

Pau: On behalf of my groupmates, we thanked you for listening to our presentation.
