CULTURAL HABITS
The world is constantly changing and evolving, but
cultural traditions are kept over time in some societies.

Colombians are always doing things that are very

particular of our culture like kissing women to begin a
social interaction (before COVID).

Cultural habits are practices that everyone within a

community accepts as normal or necessary to continue
with the cultural interaction.

people of a particular culture.
We use the present simple to talk about FACTS, HABITS,
THINGS THAT ARE ROUTINE

- The verb BE has three forms AM - IS - ARE

- If the subject is a third person singular, we include
an -S to the end of the verb.

- Offering showers to visitors happens in Brazil
- Travelling abroad does not require learning a new
language.
- Germans are very direct. A German is always
straightforward.

they brought me Coffee with milk.

THINGS THAT ARE ROUTINE
- The verb BE has two forms WAS - WERE
- In negatives and questions the verb stays normal,
you only include DID

Let’s see some examples:

- For many years, white actors imitated black people

in the movies and in songs, that was offensive, and it
stopped in the 1960s
- Some years ago, Christmas was super noisy, all
children shot fireworks. Many children lost their
fingers.

we always use the auxiliaries of the appropriate
tense.
I have lived in Risaralda for 20 years, and so far
I haven’t gone to the Otun Lagoon.
We use the present perfect to talk about SITUATIONS
THAT STARTED IN THE PAST AND CONTINUE.

SOCIAL MOVEMENTS
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized political
and social movement protesting against incidents of
police brutality and all racially motivated violence
against black people.

Black Lives Matter is a phrase, and notably a hashtag,

used to highlight racism, discrimination and
inequality experienced by black people.

Its use grew in the US after high-profile killings by

police, but it has also been used in the UK and
elsewhere.

Supporters point to the fact that black people are

much more likely to be shot by police in the US. They
say that in the US and many other countries, they
also suffer many other forms of discrimination.
