WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?

Y
• Comes from the LATIN word socius meaning “society” and the Greek
word logos meaning “the study of.” It covers almost anything that
involves people.
• The study of behavior of human in the society and the consequences of
those behaviors.
• The term ‘sociology’ was coined by August Comte the Father of
Sociology. He was a French Philosopher in 1839.
Some general questions a sociologist may ask include:

◦ What contributes to a successful marriage?


◦ How does gender affect one’s outcomes in life?
◦ To what extent does social class impact quality of life?
◦ How has society changed in the past 25 years?
4 METHODS TO STUDY
SOCIOLOGY
◦ SURVEYS – investigation into the opinions and/or lives of people. It is ideal for
studying large number of people. For example, Philippine Census is an excellent
example of a large scale survey intended to gather sociological data. (Inventory of
human population)
◦ FIELD RESEARCH – is the collection of data and information in the physical
location under study. For example, The challenges of health equity in rural areas.
◦ EXPERIMENTS – a scientific procedure to test a hypothesis or discover something
new. Inviting group of participants to a fake classroom experimenting adjustments.
◦ TEXTUAL ANALYSIS – The study of different written and communication
documents in an effort to find patterns or new information.

◦ Homelessness trends in different cities
◦ Ways racism appears in different institutions
◦ How people interact with the environment
◦ How political groups think when they are together
◦ How society is divided into different classes based on wealth

• SYMBOLS – Anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share a
culture.
• LANGUAGE – A system of symbols that allows people to communicate with one another
• VALUES – Culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable and
good
• BELIEFS – Specific statements that people hold to be true
• NORMS – Rules and expectations by which a society guides the behavior of its members
• MORES – Norms that are widely observed and have great moral significance

symbolizes death.

NORMS
Examples of norms
◦ Rice is part of the staple diet of Filipinos.
◦ Filipinos offer you to partake of their food when you happen to chance upon them eating. This
is done out of courtesy and you can politely decline and they won’t be offended.
◦ At the start of day when public offices and some malls open (especially the first showing at a
cinema), the Philippine National Anthem is played. It is expected that everyone should stand
up out of respect.
◦ We say “po” and “opo,” in line with the Philippine custom in terms of respecting the elderly,
we always say “po” in our sentence. For example, “Kumain na po ba kayo?” Which means in
English “Have you eaten?”
