What is CULTURE?
▪ Sociologist provides their understanding about
CULTURE.
Taylor: “Culture is the complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs and
habits and any capabilities acquired by man as a
member of society.”

Linton: “Culture is social heredity, which is


transmitted from one generations to another with the
accumulation of individual experiences.”

John Beattee: “Culture is the way of life which is


transmitted from generations to generations.”

Schaefer, 2013: “ Culture is the


totality of learned socially transmitted Customs,
knowledge, material objects and behaviour.”

What are the different form of Culture?

Material Culture
• Includes material or physical objects such as
technology, art, and architecture.
Example: Art, Buildings, monuments and etc.

Immaterial Culture
• Includes literature, philosophy, mythology, values,
belies, and spiritual practices.

Example: Ideas, Beliefs, Social roles, Rules,


ethics and etc.

What is Moral and Behaviour?

Moral/Morality
• English Dictionary says that, Moral/s are principles
and beliefs concerning right and wrong .

Behaviour
• It is the way a behaves or acts; conducts; manners.

Actions that produce good outcomes for the


individuals as member of community, or society.
Schuman defines moral behaviour as “Act intended to
produce kind and or/ fair outcomes.”

ROLE AND FUNCTIONS OF CULTURE IN MORAL


BEHAVIOR?
As the days past culture became the foundation of
our present times and the next generations wherein
the society provide the Moral Codes.

These Moral Codes are sets of rules or guidelines


that a person or group follows in order to live a just
and good life. It dictates many aspects of our lives,
from how we act with different age groups, to how
we dress, and even how we treat other people.

Following these standards might impact the


atmosphere of a certain group of people. In some
situation, we as the character in a certain events
must look on how Culture change its appearance,
considering the fact that culture appear or vary from
one location to another. This phenomena called
Cultural Relativism.

This is the ability to understand a culture on it’s own


terms and its own terms and not to make judgements
using the standards of one’s own culture.

Example:
• Respect (Tagalog-Po at Opo and Ilocano Wen
tatang Wen Nanang).
• Budol Fight
• Eating nganga

The goal of this is to promote understanding of


cultural practices that are not typically part of one’s
own culture.

What is Universal Values?

Rachels (2018:3) points out that there are some


moral rules that all society must embrace because
these rules are necessary for society ton exist. The
rules against lying and murder re two examples.

Universal Values are the actions of a person that is


aligned to the global standards in which he/she must
understand and performed.

How about us, We as Filipino?

We as the Filipino People are always prone in some issues


concerning with our culture and how we behave, react and
give perspective. The epitome for these are;

FILIPINO STRENGHTS
• Pakikipag-kapwa tao
• Family oriented
• Cheerfulness and Joyful
• Hardworking
• Faith and Religiosity
• Flexibility, adaptability and creativity
• Ability to survive.

FILIPINO WEAKNESSES
• Kanya-kanyang syndrome and Crab Mentality
• Bahala na system
• Lack of initiative and discipline
• Extreme personalism
• Palusot system etc.
LET’S RECAPITULATE

Allowing ourselves to balance


the impact of culture to us,
specifically on our perspectives
in life can hone our decisions,
and principles of life. Let our
mind discover the meaning of a RECAP
certain phenomena in order for
us to cope and understand the
