Commitment is ‘‘an intent to persist in a relationship, including long-term orientation toward the

involvement, as well as feelings of psychological attachment,"

satisfaction is ‘‘positive versus negative affect experienced in a relationship’’ These two factors can
predict whether couples stay together for the long haul.

Uncertainty, or the study of our reactions to not knowing something, is a motivator of

communication. "Relational uncertainty," is defined by an inability to predict and explain one’s own
behavior and the behavior of others They argue that these three factors might help explain the
frequency with which one attempts to make his or her partner feel jealous.

The research team found that individuals who reported more frequent attempts at making partners
jealous also reported lower levels of satisfaction, higher levels of uncertainty, and lower levels of
perceived partner commitment. That said, when examining the unique predictive abilities of each
variable, perceived level of partner commitment emerged as the only predictor of jealousy
evocation.

Jealousy-evoking. The Evoking Jealousy Scale developed by Cayanus andBooth-Butterfield (2004) has
reported a past alpha reliability of 0.95 (Cayanus &Booth-Butterfield, 2004) and for the present
study, 0.93. Participants responded to18 items on a 7-point Likert-type survey, 1 being ‘‘never’’ and
7 being ‘‘always,’’ witha possible range of 18 to 126. Participants were directed to respond to each
statementpreceded with the prompt: ‘‘I have tried to make my partner jealous by ...’’ Forexample,
some possible behaviors included ‘‘dancing with someone else while he=she is around’’ and
‘‘dressing nicely when going out.’’ The instrument was developedto determine the amount to which
the participants evoke jealousy within their spe-cific relationship; higher scores indicate high levels
of jealousy-evoking behaviors.

Level of commitment was measured via the Relational Commit-ment Scale and was extracted from
the Investment Model Scale (Rusbult et al.,1998). Rusbult (1983) reported a reliability of 0.83. The
purpose is to measure the level of commitment the participant feels toward the relationship, and in
the current study, an alpha reliability of 0.93 was obtained. The participants completed this scale
twice: first to measure their own commitment level and second to measure the per-ceived level of
commitment of their partner. This was accomplished using the same survey but changing ‘‘I’’ to ‘‘My
partner’’ in the second portion (Samp & Solomon,2001; Sidelinger & Booth-Butterfield, 2009). The
alpha reliability for the modified scale was 0.92. This scale is a 7-item Likert-type evaluation survey,
with a possible range of 7 to 35. Responses to this scale range from 1, ‘‘do not agree at all,’’ to
5,‘‘agree completely.’’
