I. Context and Rationale

In the last few years, the world has encountered many changes. The Covid-

19 pandemic was one of the most remarkable changes that the world has seen.

It has a huge impact on the world and its people, especially in the realm of

education. Furthermore, the educational system suffered tremendously. The

students were unable to attend school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools

have been unable to provide the same level of education that students had

hoped for since then. Schools were also obliged to close for the safety of

students and teachers. As a result, the students are required to study at home,

which is less beneficial than attending face-to-face classes.

Based on DepEd Order no. 12 2020, “The Department of Education is

committed to ensuring educational continuity amidst the challenges. Education

must continue to give hope and stability, contribute to the normalization of

activities in the country, facilitate the development of their learners and bring

normality to their lives, but the health and safety of the learners and school

personnel are of utmost importance and must be protected at all times.”

Therefore, school opening will not necessarily mean traditional face-to-face

learning classrooms.

Students are frequently forced to study independently. The school

employs a variety of mediums to deliver lessons to students, such as television,

radios, and printed materials, which will allow students to learn more successfully

throughout the pandemic. In contrast, this medium is insufficient for students to

3

study well since they are faced with factors that affect their academic

performance.

The purpose of this study is to identify factors that affect the academic

performance of 12-HUMSS 3 students especially when the new normal strikes.

Ever since the pandemic happened, a lot of sectors were heavily affected and

that learning and education are one of the most devastated due to the immediate

suspension and emergence of an alternative way of learning. This study

assessed the identified factors such as coping, lack of resources, and

unpreparedness. These factors greatly affect students' academic performance in

the most vulnerable way, maybe a hindrance to continuing studying this

pandemic.

II. Action Research Questions

1. What is the socio-demographic profile in terms of

a. sex

b. age

c. number of family members

d. parents or guardians' employment status

2. What are the factors affecting the academic performance of 12-HUMSS 3

in terms of

a. availability of resources at home

b. quality of content

c. learning preference
4

d. level of difficulty

e. study atmosphere

f. parental/guardian support

g. teachers support

3. What conclusions and recommendations may be made from the study's

findings in order to improve the academic performance of 12-HUMSS 3

students?

III. Proposed Innovation/Intervention/Strategy

The use of web applications to identify the factors influencing the

academic performance of 31 respondents of 12-HUMSS 3 students is the

proposed innovation of this action research. The students will respond to the web

application, which is in the form of Google Forms. The website link will be sent to

the group chat by the researchers, and the 12-HUMSS 3 students will respond to

it.

During this difficult time of the pandemic, the online application is a great

option for collecting all of the data needed by researchers. The Google Forms

are made up of research questions about factors that affect 12-HUMSS 3

students' academic performance. It helps the student identify the distractions that

affect their academic performance. This will lead to realizations and insights for

the 12-HUMSS 3 students on what they need to avoid and improve. It will inspire

them to manage their time effectively and will help them in increasing their

productivity as students.

IV. Action Research Methods

A. Participants and/or other Sources of Data and Intervention

The participants of this survey are the willing students of the 12-HUMSS 3

class 2021–2022, at Camarines Sur National High School (CSNHS). To support

the gathered information, the researchers will use the collected data from reliable

sites on the internet.

B. Data Gathering Method

The data will be gathered by the researchers using survey questions. The

researchers will conduct the survey using Messenger since the environment is

not safe for the researchers and respondents to gather data. The researchers will

use Google Forms to create a survey, which will subsequently be answered by

students from 12-HUMSS 3. This google form will be sent to the 12-HUMSS 3

responders' group chat, and they will be asked to sign up with their email

addresses in order to answer the survey questions.

The questionnaire written in English will be utilized to collect data using

the following variables: the socio-demographic profile, availability of resources at

home, quality of content, learning preference, level of difficulty, study

6

atmosphere, parental/guardian support, and teacher support. These variables will

be the basis to gather information. A total of 39 questions were developed to

collect data on all of the variables and factors that were used in the survey

questions. The item on the questionnaire is based on the Likert scale, and

respondents may choose the following options that measure their response to

each question: Never, Seldom, Sometimes, Many Times, and Always.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The researchers will manually examine the collected data due to the small

number of participants, which does not necessitate the use of specialized

statistical methods. As a result, the researchers will employ content analysis to

study, evaluate, and assess the data produced from chosen respondents'

responses. The completed survey forms will be tabulated, graphed, and analyzed

to generate a more precise idea of the survey results. This will quantify the

factors that mostly affect the academic performance of 12-HUMSS 3 students in

this new normal setting of education.

VII. Plan for Dissemination and Utilization

The results of this study will be presented to fellow 12 - HUMSS 3 students

through communication platforms and video presentations. Since students are now

engaged in social media, the researchers will also use the social media platforms such as

Facebook, Twitter, and Tiktok to further efficiently disseminate the information and

build some improvements for students.
