INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following in a clean paper. Copy before answering. Round off to 2 decimal places
(nearest hundredths) in calculated answers. Show your solutions and submit as pdf file.

A. True or False. (1pt each)

___True___1. The unit of force is also equivalent to kg•m/s2.
___False __2. If you push against a wall, you are doing work.
__True ___3. The car is slowing down if it has an acceleration of –5 m/s 2.
___False __4. In the law of acceleration, acceleration is inversely proportional to the net force.
___ False__5. The lighter the mass of an object means that larger energy is stored in that object.
____True__6. Increasing the work will also increase the kinetic energy.
___ True___7. Tension force is a positive force.
___ False___8. Pounds (lbs) is a unit of force
___ False___9. Normal force is a force that is parallel to the surface of an object.
___ True___10. The kinetic energy of a ball thrown upwards will eventually decrease before increasing again.
___ True___11. A car traveling at 100 km/hr strikes an unfortunate bug and splatters it. The force of impact is the same
for both.
___ True___12. Friction force will slow down any motion.
___ False __13. Weight is the ratio between mass and acceleration due to gravity.
___ False___14. Spring and gravitational force are contact forces.
___ True __15. The higher the mass of an object, the greater the inertia.

B. Identification. (1pt each)

__ Force __1. It is a push or a pull which tends to change the state of rest and or of uniform motion.
Coefficient of Friction 2. Is the measure of the amount of friction existing between two surfaces.
__Law of Inertia__3. It states that an object stays at rest, if it tends to stay at rest, and stays in motion if it tends to stay in
motion.
__Scalar Quantity_4. It is a quantity with only magnitude.
__Law of Conservation of Energy_5. A law which states that within a closed system, energy can change form, but the
total amount of energy is constant.
__Momentum_6. The product of the mass and velocity of an object is called its _________.
_Isaac Newton_7. He formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation.
__ Work___8. Is defined as the force exerted on an object multiplied by the distance the object moves due to that force.
__Impulse _9. The product obtained by multiplying the average value of a force by the time during which it acts or the
equivalence of the change in momentum produced by the force in this time interval.
__9.8m/s2__10. What is the value for universal gravitational constant?

D. Problem solving. Show your solution. (5pts each)

1. In an emergency stop to avoid accident, a shoulder-strap seatbelt holds a 75-kilogram passenger firmly in place. If the
car was initially traveling at 10m/s and came to a stop in 7.3seconds. along a straight, level road, what was the average
force applied to the passenger by the seat belt?

2. A crate of mass 38-kg is pushed along a frictionless floor with a force of 124 N for a distance of 4m. Calculate the work
done.

3. If a man has a mass of 80kg and is running with an average speed of 20m/s, how much kinetic energy does he have?

mv 2 m2 m
KE = = kg = J (2 ) 2
2 s2 s

( )
2
( 80 kg ) 20 m
s
KE = = 16,000J

4. A 67-kg person runs up the stairs 12 meters high in 1.2 minutes. How much power did the person generated?
(Acceleration due to gravity (g) is 9.8m/s2).

5. What is the mass of an object hanging on an 8m ceiling if it has a potential energy of 540 Joules?

PE = MGH
M = PE / GH
540
= 9.8(8) = 6.88kg or 6.89kg

6. Calculate the friction force acting on a 100kg object that is siting on a flat surface with a coefficient of friction of 0.23.

Ff = M*FN
= 100kg * 9.8m/s^2
100kg * 9.8m/s^2 = 980

Ff = 0.23 * 980 = 225.4

A 5 kilogram object is hanging on a rope.

7. What is the tension in the rope if the acceleration of the object is zero?
T = (g-a)
T = (9.8-5)
= 49n

8. What is the tension force on the rope if the object is pulled upwards having an acceleration of 5m/s 2?
T = (g+a)
= (5+5)
=25

49+25
=74n

A small car with a mass of 695 kg is moving with a velocity of 25 m/s.

9. What is the momentum of the car?

P = m*v
695 x 25m/s = 17,375 m/s

10. What velocity is needed for a 2400kg car in order to have the same momentum?

17,375 / 2400 = 7.24 m/s
