Sheet 6: Development of Surfaces

Instructions:
• Practice all problems in rough before coming to the Drawing Session.
• Solutions are to be drawn using simple instruments on A4 sized sheets as instructed during the
lecture.
• You can refer to the text book (N. D. Bhatt, Engineering Drawing, 50th Edition) for relevant
material to help you solve these problems.
• Clearly and neatly write your name, roll number, sheet name, sheet no. on every sheet.
• The geometrical construction lines should be light as compared to the main figure lines.
• Scale and dimension the drawings suitably. Label the important nodes/points on the drawings.
Mention the scale next to the drawing if it is not 1:1 (Just write SCALE 1:2 etc. for reducing scale
and SCALE 2:1 etc. for enlarging scale).
• This sheet will be graded. You will be given marks based on the correctness, neatness, labelling
etc. of your submitted work showing your understanding of the concepts. These marks will count
towards your final course grade.
• Your answer sheet needs to be submitted before 7:50 pm. If the completed sheet is not submitted
within the lab session time, it will result in penalty on marks being allotted to that lab session. If
submission is late by 10 minutes (i.e., till 8:00 pm), then no penalty; if late by more than 10
minutes, then 100% penalty)

1. Draw the development of a transition piece with a circular cross-section at top (diameter=40
mm) and square cross-section at the bottom (each side = 60 mm). Height of the transition
piece is 50 mm.

2. A regular hexagonal pyramid with base side measuring 40 mm and the axis height 80 mm is
kept on HP with 2 base sides parallel to the VP. It is cut by AIP which is making 60 degree to
HP and passing through the mid-point of the axis. Draw the development of lateral surfaces
of this truncated object.

3. A pentagonal pyramid of base side 30 mm and length of axis 60 mm is kept on the ground on
its base. A thread is wound around the pyramid in such a way that it starts from a corner of
the base and comes back to the same corner after completing one revolution by the shortest
route. Draw the development of the pyramid and show the thread in FV and TV.

4. Draw the development of a frustum of a cone with base diameter of 70 mm and the
diameter at the top is 40 mm and height of the frustum is 50 mm.

5. A cylinder having 60 mm base diameter and axis height equal to 80 mm is kept on the
ground. A circular hole of 40 mm diameter is drilled with the drill-bit perpendicular to VP
and the centre of the hole is at the centre of the axis. Draw the development of the object.
