The lesson today is all about the overview of the Philippine Educational System

started from its first recorded in history. Right before the Pre- Colonial Period, the Philippine

has already established their own way of educational system which is most probably

according to evidence depending on the types of environment they live in. The learning takes

place on the skills they need for survival. The pre-Colonial system of education underwent

major changes during Spanish colonization because this is the time when education turned

into formal types. Many schools were established from primary to tertiary level, methods of

teaching have been introduced and curriculum is focused on Christianity.

During the American colony, the course of study is prescribed, uniformed, and

centralized. Formal structure and existence of an educational system is one of the greatest

contributions of Americans in our educational system. Many schools were opened. English is

the medium of instructions. In this era, the Philippine Commission on Instruction was

established.

Although Japanese had the shortest time in colonizing the country, they also left

contributions in our education system. The course of study in Japanese regime has

similarities with Americans. Also the 6 Basic Principles of Japanese Education have been

proven and have significant influence in the development of our educational system

particularly in terms of vocational skills and the love for work.

The present Educational system in the Philippines was patterned from the educational

system of Spain and the United State after the liberation of the Philippines in 1946.

Elementary and Secondary become compulsory which is administered by the Department of

Education. CHED and TESDA on the other hand, are responsible for higher education. And

now, the present Kto12 program which we are dealing with right now seems to be the most

applicable in this current generation. I believe that curriculum needs to upgrade, revise, craft,

and should be aligned to the present situation so that we can produce graduates that are not

just competent but globally comparable and recognized.
