Answer the following questions. Pls. use short bond paper for your answers.

1. What is the DepEd Vision and Mission?

THE Dep-Ed VISION
We dream of Filipinos who passionately love their country and whose values and competencies
enable them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to building the nation.
As a learner-centered public institution, the Department of Education continuously improves
itself to better serve its stakeholders.

THE Dep-Ed MISSION

To protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable, culture-based, and
complete basic education where:
Students learn in a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment.
Teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner.
Administrators and staff, as stewards of the institution, ensure an enabling and supportive
environment for effective learning to happen.
Family, community, and other stakeholders are actively engaged and share responsibility for
developing life-long learners.

2. Why was the focus of education different for different groups of people in different places
and at different periods in world History? What does this point to regarding relationship of
schools and society?
*The focus of education for different groups of people in different places and different
periods in world history depends on the culture of people and to the trend in the society. Another
thing is, because the region is different too and not all regions are the same. The point regarding
to the relationship of schools and the society is that the school depends on the society or society
and the school are inextricably linked. The school reflects the society and society reflects the
schools. That linkage contains the dynamics for improving the lot of arts education. In
interacting with society, one alters its culture and in the process it changes destiny.

3. Given the different characteristics of the different periods in Phil history, what were the goals
of education / schools during the:
a) Pre-colonial,
 Integration of the individual into tribe.
 The goal of education is to give the students a vocational training but lesser
academics for them to be a good fathers and mothers.
b) Spanish period
 It is to spread Christianity. The focus is more of the religion.
 The goal of education is that the school focused on religious formation to help
them live the Christian faith.
 During the early years of Spanish colonization, education was mostly religion
oriented and controlled by Roman Catholic Church. Spanish friars and
missionaries educated the natives through religion with the aim of converting
indigenous populations to Catholic faith.
c) American regime
 To spread democracy.
 The educational goal is to educate the Filipinos to become good citizens of a
democratic country.
 The principal goal of American regime in the Philippines is to educate and to train
in the science of self-government.
d) Japanese regime and
 Elevating the morals of the people giving up over emphasis on materialism.
 Spread of the new Asian Order. Focus in the principle of new order.
 The goal of education is to teach the Filipinos the love of labor.
e) Post-colonial period?
 The goal of education was devoted to the following goals:
 Foster love of country
 Teach the duties of citizenship
 Develop moral character and self-discipline
 Scientific technological and vocational efficiency
4. Was equal access to quality education met during the 5 different regimes mentioned above?
Wagsingan, Minnie A. BSED 2B-Fil.

a) Pre-colonial- No, because education in this period is informal and unstructured,

decentralized. Instead of focusing on the whole child approach, fathers taught their
sons on how to look for food and other means of livelihood and mothers taught their
daughters how to do household chores. They give less focus on the academics which
disregard the cognitive learning of the child. That’s why I doubt that there was equal
access to education during this time period from 900-1565.
b) Spanish period- No, they may have such a formal and organized education in this
period but there was a separation of schools for boys and girls. There was no national
education system managed directly by government. So clearly this falls under unequal
education because being Catholic was the primary requirement to get an education.
One more thing is wealthy Filipinos and illustrados were given much priority in the
school accommodation.
c) American period- Yes, because in the period they had a system of free and
compulsory elementary education that was established by the Malolos Constitution.
The schools are open to all religions and to all Filipinos however, all the schools
required tuition fee payments. But if one cannot afford tuition, then the schools had
scholarship programs. So this is more equal than the Spanish period. On the contrary,
because tuition was not free then there is arguably still some inequality.
d) Japanese period- Yes, because of their goals for elevating the morals of the people
giving up over emphasis on materialism.
e) Post-colonial period- Yes, because in this period the education aimed at the full
realization of the democratic ideals and the way of life. The educational system has
grown to be at its most equal than before.

5. Based on the DepEd Mission, has the Philippine educational system from pre-colonial to
present given equal access to quality, culture-base and complete basic education? Or was it a
privilege of a few? Explain your answer.
*As what I observed in the Philippine educational system, everybody has the right to
education. The government had provided and funded big amount of money for the education
sector. They have programs to help the parents who are struggling to support the studies of their
children. They have scholarship and a lot of programs to help improve the educational system in

the Philippines but there are still lapses on it. As we look around us, there are still street children
and children who choose to stay at home because they failed to go. Yes, Philippines had
provided for educational but really it is not enough.
