SPEAKING TEST FOR GEP 5 (Units 1 - 5)

SPEAKING TEST GUIDELINES


Please announce the information below and the topics to the students in your class once you
receive them so that students can make proper preparation.
The speaking test must be administered in the same format as described in this document
to ensure consistency among different classes. The students have to prepare all the 10 test
sets prior to the test. On the test day, they will pick a random set for their speaking test.

DURING THE COURSE


Week 1 The format of the test, time limitation and all the topics should be
announced to students right from the beginning of the course.
Each student needs to pair with a classmate to prepare for the test.
Please kindly ask your students to find their partners and register
their names with you in the following week.
Week 2 Please have pairs of students register their names. If there is an
odd number of students, the teacher may provide support by
assigning a classmate to help the remaining student. The
supporting student may be awarded with bonus marks at the
teacher’s discretion.
During the course Please remind your students to prepare all the topics on a regular
basis.
One week before the test Some in-class practice is recommended. Please remind students of
the procedures and share some test-taking tips with them.

ON THE TEST DAY


BEFORE THE TEST
- Call in a pair of students.
- Let each pair select a topic randomly.
- When one pair of students is ready to take the test, another should be called in so that they have
enough time to choose the topic and prepare.

DURING THE TEST
PART ONE: Individual Talk (1 minute, 5 marks)
- Invite a pair of students to sit down.
- Ask the students to introduce themselves and then sign the exam marking sheet.
- Ask each student to start his/her individual talk based on the chosen topic.
- Each of the students will deliver his/her talk without interruption for 1 minute.

PART TWO: Discussion (2 minutes, 5 marks)


- Each of the students takes sides before starting the discussion.
- They are expected to give reasons, evidence and examples to clarify their perspectives.
- The discussion should last 2 minutes.

Notes:
- After the students have finished, write their grades next to their signatures and tell them what
grade they have achieved.
- If time allows, you might also briefly tell them their strengths and weaknesses, and why you
awarded the given grades.
