INTRODUCTION
The Discipline of Counseling. The potential of every human being to change and to continue
learning throughout the lifespan, in formal and informal settings, and especially in the environment of
counseling and psychological services. Strong relationships as the primary vehicle in helping others
to learn new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving, including collaboration within the university
community, and partnering with other offices to provide comprehensive mental health services to
students. An emphasis on prevention of mental health problems via education, intervention, and
outreach into the University Community. Respect human dignity, partnership, autonomy, responsible
caring, personal integrity, and social justice are the core values of counseling.

Professionals and Practitioners in the Discipline of Counseling. Guidance Counselors – as
natural person who has been professionally registered and licensed by a legitimate state entity and
by virtue of specialized training to perform the functions of guidance and counseling. To assist the
person or clients in realizing a change in behaviour or attitude, to assist them to seek achievement
and goals, to assist them to find help, teaching of social skills, effective communication, spiritual
guidance, decision making, and career choice are the roles of guidance counselors.
Helping a client develop potentials to the fullest, helping client plan to utilize his or her
potentials to the fullest, helping client plan his or her future in accordance with his or her abilities,
interest, and needs, sharing and applying the knowledge related to counseling such as counseling
theories, tools, and techniques; and administering a wide range of human development services are
the function of guidance counselors.
Having the ability to administer and maintain career guidance and counseling programs,
administer career guidance advocacy activities, capable career advocates; and facilitate conduct of
career advocacy collaboration with career advocates and peer facilitators are the competencies of
guidance counselors.
Attending and listening, reflective skills, probing skills are the foundation skills in guidance
counseling (Cully & Bond 2004). Common skills in studying the curriculum of accumulated scientific
knowledge across disciplines; communication skills, motivational skills, problem-solving skills, and
conflict resolution skills.
Areas of specialization where counselor work are child development and counseling,
adolescent development and counseling, gerontology (the aged), marital relationship counseling,
health, career/lifestyle, college and university, drug, consultation, business and industry, and other
specialist.
Career opportunities for counselors are educational and school counselor, vocational or
career counselor, marriage and family counselor, addictions and behavioral counselor, mental health
counselor, rehabilitation counselor, and genetic counselor.
