INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences! A specialized subject for
Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences and elective subject for General Academic Strand. This
course introduces you to the basic of Social Science as a study of society and the way people
behave and impact the world and Applied Social Science focus on the use and application of the
different concepts, theoretical models, and theories of the social science disciplines to help
understand society and the different problems and issues it faces. It has 3 main fields:
1. Counseling provides guidance, help and support to individuals who are distraught by a
diverse set of problems in their lives. It can be done by guidance counselor, life coaches, personal
growth counselor and career counselor.
2. Social work helps people enhance their skills and ability so they can use their own
resources and of the community to resolve social problems. It does not only deal with individual and
personal problems, but it also addresses social issues such as poverty, unemployment, and
domestic violence. Social workers include educators, advocates, case managers, facilitators, and
agents of community change.
3. Communication studies include the field of mass media or even entertainment industry.
Practitioners in this field are equipped with theories and concepts about communication that allows
them to understand and inform the public about the social, political, cultural and economic realities
and also have skills to write, produce and deliver their work accurately and creatively to the viewing
public.

COUNSELING is a field of study or a discipline that is involved in the provision of advice or guidance
in decision-making, particularly in emotionally significant situations.
Discipline of Counseling is a relationship characterized by application appropriate of one or more
psychological theories and recognized set of communication skills appropriate to client’s intimate
concerns, problems, or aspirations. Counseling – the process of guiding a person during stage of life
when reassessment or decision must be made about himself and his or her life course. Counselor –
are professionally trained and certified to performed counseling. Psychometrics – is a branch of
psychology that deals with the design, administration, and interpretation of quantitative test for
measurement of psychological variables such as intelligent, aptitude, interest, and personality traits.
Psychiatry – which is a branch of general medicine that deals with the treatment of mentally ill by
medically-trained professionals using clinical interventions including drugs, surgical procedures, and
non-physical approaches.
Context and basic Concepts of Counseling – is affected by the context of peers,
neighborhood, culture and counseling. The surrounding factors should be managed well to
contribute toward the success of the engagement of client, counselor, contextual and process.
Understanding oneself, client empowerment, improve motivation, developed positive outlook and
improve relationship with others are the goals of counseling. The scope of counseling is wide.
Essentially, it involves application of some psychological theories and recognized communication
skills. It does not deal with clinical cases such as mental illness. It is a professional relationship that
requires an eventual closure and termination of the counselee-counselor relationship.
The identified goals above indicate the scope of counseling. Counseling is necessary in
almost every aspect of a person’s life: cognitive, behavioral, systemic, social, psychological and
others. It is also applied to individuals, family, and groups. On individual counseling, many issues
are covered such as depression, sexual abuse, anxiety, gender, relationship, spirituality, ideology,
adolescent issues, loss, anger, stress, vocation, studies and others. In terms of family counseling,
issues include divorce, family dynamics, transitions in life, miscommunication, jealousy, money
mothers, parenting, remarriage, and others.
Principles of counseling are advise, reassurance, release of emotional tension, clarified
thinking, reorientation, listening skills, respect, empathy and positive regard, clarification,
confrontation, and interpretation, transference and countertransference.
Ethical Principles of Counseling (Counselor Shall:) act with care and respect for individual
and cultural differences and diversity of human experience, avoid doing harm in all their professional
work, respect the confidences with which they are entrusted, promote safety and well-being of
individuals, families, and communities, seek to increase the range of choices and opportunities for
client, be honest and trustworthy in all their professional relationships, practice within the scope of
their competence, and treat colleagues and other professionals with respect.

Situational Activity: Cite a concrete scenario where the applied social sciences (counseling, social
work or communication studies) complement relevantly to the social sciences disciplines. For an
instance, the journalist is knowledgeable in geography and history thus his articles are
focused on the beauty of the Philippine landscapes and the colorful Philippine history.
