Who the Holy Spirit is

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The Trinity consists of God the
father, God the son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament time,
men whom God used were given the Spirit of God. For example, when Saul and
David were anointed as kings of Israel, the Spirit of God came upon them. When
special tasks were to be performed, the Spirit of God came upon the person to
perform the task. Examples were Samson, Gideon, and many others. The
descent of the Holy Spirit is traced to the day of Pentecost when the disciples of
Jesus Christ assembled at the upper room in Jerusalem.
The Holy Spirit was a promise made by Jesus to his apostles. He toldthem that
after he had died and gone to be with his father, he would send the Holy Spirit,
the comforter and counsellor, to guide them to all truth. This was fulfilled.
The Holy Spirit is still living in our hearts and controls our lives today.

God is the giver of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He
guides, leads, comforts and counsels us in our daily activities.

The Holy Spirit helps us in self-discipline: He helps us in controlling our urge not
to sin against God. He controls our temper. The Holy Spirit helps us to be honest
with ourselves and with those around us: We must not tell lies; we should be
truthful. The Holy Spirit enables us to be obedient to God’s words, and to our

.How the Holy Spirit makes us faithful

In Acts 7, we read about Stephen who was the first martyr. He loved God and
preached the good news to the Jews. The Jews hated him and told lies against
him. They said that Stephen, a deacon in the church, spoke disrespectfully to the
elders, the law and God. They conspired against him and he was killed. The Holy
Spirit helped Stephen to forgive them. He was a faithful servant of God until
death. We too should be loyal and faithful to God even at the point of death.

The Holy Spirit gives different talents to different people. We all have different
talents. Nobody is useless. Some may have the talent to encourage others, give
gifts, or to make others happy. God may give you the talent to assist the
orphans. We should try and identify God’s gift in our lives and we should use
them.

We should not be like the servant with a talent but he buried it. His masterhad
to throw him into total darkness. We must be faithful with our talents.

Moral lessons

We should allow the Holy Spirit to live in our hearts even though we do notsee
him. He can help us in our daily activities and decisions.

We should use the talents God has given us and not bury them.

Remember

The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity. He helps us to be honest. he
comforts us in times of sorrow. He helps us to use our talents properly if we
yield to Him.

Reasons to love one another

There are many reasons for us to love another. One of them is that God our
father is love – since God is love and we cannot see him, the only way to know
him is to love one another. Our relationship with him is based on his great love
for us. The love God has for us is special because it is everlasting. This is why
when we offend him and ask for forgiveness, he is happy to forgive us. Jesus
explains this to us with the parable of the prodigal son.

The way the father of the prodigal son happily forgave his son when he
repented is the way God is always happy to forgive us anytime we repent and
ask him for forgiveness. He loves us always.

Another thing that makes God’s love for us special is because God’s love
is unconditional. God loves us not because we are good, but because God is
love. He just loves us dearly. He has provided for us all the
things we need to stay alive: He has given us air, sun, water, food. He knew that
we would need them so he provided them before he created us. As God is love
and has unconditional and everlasting love for us, we should, in the same way,
love one another. This will make us know God andvhave closer relationship with
him.

GOD SENT HIS ONLY SON TO DEMONSTRATE HIS LOVE

Another reason for us to love one another is that God sacrificed his son
for us. The greatest way God has manifested or demonstrated his love for us is
by sending his only son, Jesus, to come to the world to suffer and to die for our
sins. This is because God does not want us to perish in hell. He wants us to have
eternal life because he loves us.

We have to love one another because it is God’s command – The summary of

the ten commandments God gave us is that we should love our

neighbours as ourselves. This means that we should love our fellow human
beings. If we do not love our fellow human beings, it means we are disobeying
God and God will punish us. God wants us to be his good children, so he
punishes us when we disobey him so as to correct us. We should always love
one another to obey God our father.

How to demonstrate love for one another

1. One of the major ways we can demonstrate love for one another is through
caring and helping people that are in need.

Jesus explains this to a lawyer that asked him what he should do to gain eternal
life. Jesus informed the lawyer that for him to gain eternal life, he must love
God with all his heart and mind; he should also love his neighbour as himself.
The lawyer asked Jesus whom he should regard as his neighbour. Jesus used the
story of the Good Samaritan to explain to him that anybody that is in need
should, out of love, be helped and cared for as a neighbour. In other words, one
of the ways of demonstrating love is through the care and help that we render
to one another especially in times of need.

2. Another way of demonstrating love for one another is by encouraging

ourselves to grow in faith. We do this by visiting one another, sharing the word
of God and also through house fellowships. Preaching the gospel to those who,
out of ignorance, have not known Christ is one of the ways we demonstrate
love to one another. Preaching the gospel to them would help save them from
eternal condemnation.

1.We should love one another because God our father is love.2. We cannot see
God, so the way to know him is to love since God is love. In other words, he who
loves knows God because God is love.

Importance of loving one another

Loving one another makes us not to think or do evil to other people. For
example, if we love other people, we will not discriminate, provoke, envy, kill or
do such other evils to them. This is why John in his gospel said that our love for
one another should be seen in truth and in deeds or actions. Because Cain was
envious of his brother, Abel, he killed him. Cain did evil to his brother because
he did not have love. John therefore says that we should love one another
because anyone who does not love hates. Then a person who hates can one day
become a murderer.

Loving one another also makes us serve as light to other people. It should be
seen in our concern for the needy. If we show true love to people, they can
become attracted to Christianity and have knowledge of Christ. Where people
love one another, they live in peace and unity. Lack of love for one another
makes people quarrel and fight every time. Sometimes while quarrelling, they
destroy things, get people wounded and even killed.

A society or nation where people do not love one another does not

fast progress; it does not develop well. This is because people find it difficult to
work together. Sometimes the people would even be at war.

Moral lessons
1 As Christians, we should be obedient to the spirit of God by loving
onevanother in truth and in deed. God has commanded us in his law to love our
neighbours as ourselves.

2 We have to love one another because it helps us to have clean mind towards
other people.

3 As Christians, loving one another will make us care for the less privileged
people or help anyone we see that is in need.

Remember

1.We should love one another because God our father is love.

2. We cannot see God, so the way to know him is to love since God is love. In
other words, he who loves knows God because God is love.

3. Our relationship with God is based on his love for us. God has everlasting and
unconditional love for us.

4.Out of his love for us, God has provided for us all the things we need to stay
alive. Air, sun, water and food are some of those things he has given us.

5. The greatest way God showed his love for us was by sending his only son,
Jesus, to suffer and to die for us so that we may have eternal life. So, we should
love one another to appreciate what Jesus did for us.

6.We should love one another to show obedience to the word of God. God in his
law has commanded us to love our neighbours as ourselves.

Reward can be in different forms. It can be in kind or in cash.

Reward of working in the Holy Spirit

When we work in the Holy Spirit, we will receive various rewards. These
rewards include:

1. God’s guidance – Ananias had a wife called Sapphira. They sold a piece of
land for a certain amount of money. They were supposed to bring all the money
but they kept part of the money and brought the remaining part to the apostles.
Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he told him, ‘Ananias, why has Satan
filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds of
the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it
was sold, was it not at your disposal?’ Immediately, Ananias fell down and died.
When his wife Sapphira came in, Peter asked her, ‘How is it that you have
agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?’ She too fell down and died.
Both the husband and the wife were buried the say day for lying to the Holy
Spirit.

2. Oneness – When the apostles were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit,
they stayed together and did all things in common. They sold their goods and
distributed them according to the needs of one another; they broke bread
together. The Holy Spirit rewarded them with oneness.

3. Courage – Peter and John were arrested for healing a cripple. They were kept
in custody because it was evening time. In the morning they were brought out.
They were asked, ‘By what power or by what name did you do this?’ Peter was
filled with the Holy Spirit; he spoke with courage. He explained to them that the
man was healed by the name of Jesus whom they crucified but whom God
raised from the dead. When the people saw the boldness of Peter and John,
they realised that they must have been with Jesus.
