Henry Sy (Shoe Mart)

Henry Sy grew up in a low-income family in Jinjang, Xiamen,

China. Because of the difficulties in their home country, they
relocated to the Philippines in 1936 and opened a small convenience
store in Manila.

Soon after, World War II broke out, destroying the family

business. Sy, on the other hand, kept his entrepreneurial interests
alive by selling used military combat boots and other items to
American soldiers. This is the origin of the name "Shoe Mart": it was
Manila's first shoe store at the time. Even though he couldn't find
any vendors who could make the shoes he wanted, Sy persisted.

Shoe Mart, or SM for short, is now a well-loved institution with

fond memories for many Filipino families. It offers a variety of
services such as shopping, theaters, locations for date nights, parties,
and other special occasions, ice skating, and food courts. Despite its
now upscale reputation, SM began modestly and from humble
beginnings.

Mariano Que (Mercury Drug)

Mariano Que discovered a commercial opportunity after WWII.

Que, who had worked at a local drugstore before the war, opened
his own drugstore when he noticed the demand for sulfa, a type of
antibiotic used to treat bacterial illnesses. began selling high-quality
sulfa at a low cost. As a result, he was able to grow his customer
base. He established the Mercury Drug pharmacy chain in 1945.

The Mercury Drug was named after the Roman god Mercury,
who was known for his speed as well as for originating the medical
industry’s symbol, the caduceus. He helped the company grow over
time, and it is now one of the country's most well-known drugstores.

Mercury Drug is more than just a pharmacy; it is the country's

most trusted and caring health and wellness partner, offering the
most comprehensive range of branded and generic medications, as
well as a full line of healthcare and personal care products, including
medical devices and basic everyday necessities.

Socorro Ramos (National Book Store)

Socorro Ramos began her publishing and retail career as a

salesgirl in a bookstore. At the age of 19, she and her husband
opened the National Book Store in Escolta with a capital of PHP200,
selling books and school supplies to children. At the time, the
Japanese censored books, and publications, including her burgeoning
business. Her husband and she supplemented their income by selling
other items such as candles and soaps.

After the postwar boom increased revenue for the company, the
Ramoses built a nine-story structure along Avenida. Ramos took an
active role in running her company. She worked not only as manager
but also as cashier, purchaser, saleslady, janitor, and helper because
she couldn't afford more help.  She even designed the logo herself.

The National Book Store rose to prominence by selling reprinted

versions of foreign textbooks at 75% off the original price. The idea
of being able to purchase such books at a lower cost appealed to
both parents and students.

Helping underprivileged children is one of the company's core

values. As a result, in 2004, NBS established the National Book Store
Foundation, Inc. (NBSFI) as its social arm, in charge of carrying out
the company's efforts to improve the lives of underprivileged
children through education empowerment.
