URBAN DESIGN STUDY TRIP- PORT BLAIR, A & N ISLANDS

Study Trip Date: 20th July’2019 to 28th July’2019.

Aim
The aim of the trip is to do our micro study for chosen study area in Port Blair for our IX semester urban
design studio.
Objective
➢ To do reconnaissance survey
➢ Manual Documentation of Places, Buildings & People.
➢ To conduct Household, Traffic & Theme based Surveys
➢ To meet the Officials of the Concerned departments.
➢ To have an overview of the Macro & Meso study done in Class.

Introduction
The study has been organised as port of the IX sem, Architectural Design-VI Studio. In this semester the
students are expected to study the developing urban chunk and after analysing it through various surveys,
studies & observations. Later they will be coming up with proposal which will try to tap the potential or to
rectify the issue existing there.

For the same, students of our section (V-B) have taken Port Blair, A & N Islands for their study. A Macro,
Meso study has been conducted before going to the site. On the study and surveys are conducted to fill the
gap in our desktop study and to gather information for the Micro study.

The 9-day study trip had different task and duties to perform by each group, end of each day had an
interaction with the faculty members to check the progress, to give inputs. Each day schedule and task are
listed below.

RURAL STUDY REPORT

Name of the Subject : ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN – II

A rural settlement is a sparsely populated community that exist in the country away from densely populated
urban centre. The word “rural” relates to the characteristics of the country side rather than the town. A rural
study is an opportunity to learn the critical skills of planning, designing and building in a practical and
socially responsible manner.

Survey Brief

We observed the problems faced by rural housing on our visit to the rural site, Thazhathangadi. Various
surveys were conducted based on physical, socio-economic, housing, infrastructure,visuals to study on the
existing conditions. Analysis of the collected datas were presented as reports and presentations in the
evening after every session. Proposal for rural development in each sector.

Aim of the Study

➢ To study on the history, lifestyle, settlements, culture.


➢ To know their economical status
➢ To learn about land, vegetation, topography
➢ To analyse the housing typology and architectural features

Core Concept

It was mainly emphasizing on the interation with the outer community beyond college. It helped us to know
more on their culture, household, etc.

Physical Survey

Surveys conducted on geographical, geological, topography,vegetation,site,roads, complete layout of


village,etc. computer based presentation skills have developed.

Socio Economic Survey

Conducted census survey by getting through houses.interaction skills grew. Visited all the public and private
spaces. History of the village and their income sources were analysed.

Housing

Evolution of houses were learned. Roofing style, space arrangement, construction techniques, housing
typology,street skyline were surveyed in detail.

Infrastructure

Religious buildings were documented. Services, communication, transport, pollution, on-site and off-site
factors were surveyed. Zoning based on public activities.

Visuals

Visual survey was done. Entrance point, landmarks, symbols and signs, focal elements, junctions, aesthetics,
color, texture, grain pattern ,roofscape, skyline,spatial organization and spatial relationship, pattern,
dominance, time based on occupation,hierarchy in openspace,approach ,circulation pattern were sketched on
site.

The aim of the trip is to do study of socio-economical landscape of Madgaon, Goa for our IX semester urban
design studio.
Objective
➢ To study the history, evolution, and culture of the city
➢ Manual Documentation of Places, Buildings & People.
➢ To conduct Household, Traffic & Theme based Surveys
➢ To meet the Officials of the Concerned departments.
➢ To have an overview of the Macro & Meso study done in Class.

URBAN CONTEXT STUDY – KAKKANAD, COCHIN

Aim
The aim of the project is to make students understand the importance of spatial planning within the
constraints of Development Regulations and to enable them to design for large groups of people in a socially
and culturally sensitive manner, taking into account aspects such as user perception, crowd behaviour,
largescale movement of people as per the Feseablity and market study of the SelectedKakkanad context.

Objectives
• To introduce the challenges involved in the design of projects related to diverse needs and ways of
contemporary urban life.
• To enable exploration of the above projects with perception, socio-cultural awareness and
innovation.

Introduction

Kakkanad is a major industrial and residential region in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. It is situated in
the eastern part of the city and houses the Cochin Special Economic Zone, Info Park, Smart
City and KINFRA Export Promotion Industrial Park. It is also the administrative headquarters of the District
of Ernakulam

Industry
Kakkanad is home for a portion of the industrial base of Kochi. It is home for the Cochin Special Economic
Zone (CSEZ). Carborundum Universal Ltd has a unit near the technopolis. Industrial projects like Fashion
City are proposed in Kakkanad. This has led to several builders setting up projects here.
Being the IT Capital of Kerala, Kakkanad is home for the largest IT Township in India, the Smart City, the
second largest IT industrial park in Kerala, the Kochi Info Park. Kakkanad is also home for a Software
Export Promotion Zone (SEPZ). The international submarine cable systems landing in Kochi has their nodes
installed in Kakkanad. The CSEZ houses the Cognizant Technology Solutions, Williams’s lea, WRENCH
Solutions, and the Sutherland Global Solutions.
