Answer the following questions in paragraph form using calibri 12.

1. What made you decide to take up Medical Technology?

Medical technology has been my dream program since I realized in high school that
I want to pursue medicine. What made me finalize my decision in taking medical
technology as my program is the webinars I attended for my work immersion class in
senior high school. There I realized what medical technology is, what medical
technologists do, and the risk and the help that medical technology does as a partner of
the other fields. These things made up my mind to finally take up med tech as my
college program.

2. Once you become a registered medical technologist, how can you uphold the ethical
practice of the profession?

Being a registered medical technologist comes with risks that we have to avoid
and ethical practices to follow to deliver accurate and precise results to the doctors and
their patients. One way we can uphold our ethical practice is to be open to any criticism
when it comes to our work and be a person who always learns from everything we do.
Being honest and responsible in dealing with the laboratory results and admitting your
mistakes is also a way of upholding the ethical practice of our profession. In addition,
always make sure to abide by the laws in practicing your profession and also know how
to be tight-lipped in protecting the confidentiality of the patient's results. In these ways,
I am sure that I can uphold the ethical practice of a medical technologist.

3. Construct a timeline of the history of the medical technology profession in the Philippines.
The medical technology professionals in the Philippines flourished together with
the Spanish empire up to this day. In 1565 Hospital Real was established but later on,
Manila needed assistance so the hospital was transferred to help the military patients.
13 years later in 1578 a hospital for the poor and lepers, the San Lazaro Hospital, was
built. In 1596 a hospital for poor Spaniards was built, Hospital de San Juan de Dios. The
University of Santo Tomas was founded in 1611. In 1641 the Cavite Hospital de San Jose
was established.

Later the first faculty of pharmacy and medicine at UST was founded in 1871. In
1883 the board of health and charity was established. Since the development of health
and academic institutions, journals for medicine and science were created. One of these
journals is 1886, Boletin de Medicina de Manila. In 1887 laboratory examination and
clinical samples were performed in the Laboratorio Municipal de Manila; this is also the
year the laboratory was established. Another journal that was established was in 1893,
the Revista Farmaceutica de Filipinas, and Cronicas de Ciencias Médicas in 1895. In 1898
preceding the defeat of Manila, the First Reserve Hospital was established after being
previously a Spanish military hospital. Laboratory was still not fully maximized at this
point however Richard P. Strong utilized the laboratory in his time and performed many
tests namely Autopsies, examination of blood, and such.

19th-century Spaniard authorities in medicine began to study microbial causes of

diseases. The Bureau of Government Laboratories was established under Commission
Act No. 156 in 1901. The Bureau contains a science laboratory, chemical section, serum
laboratory, and vaccine production. Unfortunately in World War 2, the Bureau was
destroyed but now the National Institute of Health of the University of the Philippine
Manila is built in its place. In 1905 the Bureau of Science was built for the medical officer
who wanted to pursue laboratory research. In 1927, the UP college of public health
intending to train the philippine health services medical officers opened the Certificate
in Public Health Program.

In the medical laboratory of the US army in 1941 performed different laboratory

examinations namely special serological, culture media, etc. In 1942 the first laboratory
to be assigned in the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) was the 3rd Medical Laboratory. In
1944 laboratories such as the 3rd, 5th, and 8th medical laboratory and 10 medical
general laboratories were relocated or transferred to the western pacific area when the
US forces landed on Leyte. Other medical laboratories were also transferred to the
different parts of the island that same year. In 1945 the 26th Medical General Laboratory
was endorsed to the National Department of Health when the Us army left. The lab was
not operational until 1947 after a 6 month-long training to become a medical
technician. In 1954 the program SMT was approved by the Bureau of Private Education
and the 1st school of medical technology was opened by the Manila Sanitarium and
Hospital (MSH). UST offered Medical technology as an elective in pharmacy in 1957. In
1961 the Medical technology program was recognized as a 4-year course in UST. 1996
Board of Health and Charity expanded.
