Waste Generation and
Management

8
What is Waste Generation?
Waste generation includes all materials
discarded, whether or not they are later
recycled or disposed in a landfill. Waste
generation rates for residential and
commercial activities can be used to
estimate the impact of new developments
on the local waste stream.

9
Waste Generation and Management
The planet is suffering because of the rising global
population. Many times, the trash produced by the
current paradigm of production and consumption is
not recycled or utilized. For instance, each person in
Europe produces 1.69 kg of waste on average
every day, or 620 kg year. Packaging and product
containers, which are frequently made for a single
use, account for 60% of the volume of garbage
produced.
2
Proper ways to Manage Waste
Consumers and the 3 Rs rule

In terms of their behavior, customers also

have a significant role to play. They must
responsibly use things by following the 3
Rs rule: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

10
Reduce

Reduce entails preventing the creation of

waste by changes to our consumption
patterns, manufacturing processes, and
purchasing practices.

11
Reuse

Reusing a product means putting it to use

again for the same purpose (repairing it) or
a different one, extending its useful life.

12
Recycle

Recycling enables us to utilize the various

waste materials and add them as raw
materials to the production process.
