TOPIC Quadratic Equations

The learner illustrates Quadratic Equations (M9AL –Ia-1)
LEARNING 1. Describes quadratic equations;
COMPETENCY 2. Transforms quadratic equations into standard form; and
3. Identifies the values of a, b and c given the quadratic equation.
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the Learner’s

UNDERSTAND
Quadratic Equations

QUADRATIC EQUATION
A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2
that can be written in the following standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a,
b and c are real numbers and a≠ 0.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES

x2 – 5x + 3 = 0 2y2 = y – 1 𝑦2 + 𝑦=
2

-p2 + 5p = 9 (m + 4) ( m – 3) = 2 0.5s2 – 0.25s = 0

STANDARD FORM OF QUADRATIC EQUATION

The standard form of Quadratic Equation is written in the form
𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 = 0,
where x represents the unknown, 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 are real numbers with 𝑎 ≠ 0.
In the equation 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄 = 0,
• 𝒂𝒙𝟐 is the quadratic term and 𝒂 is the
coefficient of the quadratic term
• 𝒃𝒙 is the linear term and 𝒃 is the
coefficient of the linear term
• 𝒄 is the constant term and 𝒄 is also the
constant

SAQ-1: Why do you think in the standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0, “a” must not be equal
to zero?
SAQ-2: How do you transform Quadratic equation to Standard Form?

Let’s Practice! (Write your answer on the separate sheets provided.) (Answer o

ACTIVITY 1: Yes or No?

Directions: Identify whether or not each equation is a quadratic equation. Write Yes if the
equation is quadratic and No if it is not on the box provided.

You have seen the illustrative examples of transforming quadratic equations

into standard form and find the values of a, b and c, and you have also seen
that the same can be illustrated when the quadratic equations are incomplete
by following the different ways of coming out a quadratic equations of wherein
you can identify the values of a, b and c.

Always take note that a quadratic equation is a second-degree equation

where the highest exponent of the variable is 2.

EQUATIONS YES OR NO
1.) y3 + 3x = 0
2.) 8m - 2 = 0
3.) w2 - 2w = 5
4.) x4 = 1
5.) 8x2 + 2= 0

3
ACTIVITY 1: Let’s Solve!

Directions: Complete the table by transforming the quadratic equation into the Standard
Form ax2 + bx + c = 0, then identify the values of the real numbers a, b and c. The first is
done for you.

To enhance more your skills in writing a quadratic equation into the standard
form ax2 + bx + c = 0, you will now apply all the steps learned in transforming
quadratic equations to standard form and be able to identify the values of a, b
and c.

REMEMBER
Key Points

⚫ A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical sentence of degree 2 that can

be written in standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b and c are real numbers and
a≠ 0.

⚫ Steps in transforming quadratic equation to standard form ax 2 + bx + c = 0 and

identifying the real numbers a, b and c.

⚫ If a quadratic equation is not in Standard form, apply the properties of equality to

simplify the equation then express it in standard form.

⚫ To identify the values of a, b and c, the quadratic equation must be in the standard
form.
