Questions for assignment:

1. What are exact and non-exact differential equations. Solve the following differential
equations.
𝑑𝑦 √𝑥 2 +𝑦 2
a. =𝑦+
𝑑𝑥 𝑥
𝑑2 𝑦 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦 𝑑2 𝑦
b. + 4 𝑑𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 0 , where y=2 and 𝑑𝑥 = 𝑑𝑥 2 when x = 0
𝑑𝑥 2

2. Show that the force field 𝑓⃗ = (𝑦 2 𝑧 3 − 6𝑥𝑧 2 )𝑖̂ + 2𝑥𝑦𝑧 3 𝑗̂ + (3𝑥𝑦 2 𝑧 2 − 6𝑥 2 𝑧)𝑘̂ is
conservative. Find the work done in moving a particle from the points (-2,1,3) to (1, -2,1)
in the given force field.
3. Show that if the motion of a particle is confined to a plane under the influence of central
force, then the areal velocity remains constant. Obtain the ratio of kinetic energy of two
satellites A and B of same mass orbiting earth in circular orbit at altitudes 2R and 3R
respectively, where R is the radius of earth.
4. Defined damped oscillations. A harmonic oscillator of mass 8 Kg in its resting position has
potential energy of 6 joules, total energy 10 joules and amplitude 2 cm. calculate its time
period.
5. Three particles each of mass 0.5 Kg placed at the corners of an equilateral triangle of side
√3𝑎 , if one of the particles is removed, find out the change in position of centre of mass.
6. Define radius of gyration. Determine the moment of inertia of a hemispherical shell of
radius R.
7. Describe the principle of a rocket? Establish the equation (instantaneous velocity) of a
rocket in the presence of gravity.
8. Two objects are moving in the opposite direction, each with a speed of 0.9c. find the
relative speed of the objects.
