Hello, everyone!

I would like to share with you an issue about BUS_ERR alarm on the CXL boards in an
OptiX OSN 1500B.

The CXL provides service processing, service grooming, clock input/output, and
communication control functions in the OptiX OSN system.

The CXL provides the other boards in the system with the timing information, processes the
SDH signals, grooms the services between line boards or tributary boards, communicates with
the other boards in the system, and performs the configuration and management functions for
the other boards in the system.

Description:
The customer reports a degradation of the services (E1 signals) processed by the PD1 board.

BIP_SD alarms are reported by VC-12 service trails.

BIP_SD is an alarm indicating that the signal degrades due to the excessive BIP errors. This
alarm is reported when the board detects that the BIP-2 errors (in byte V5) exceed the
BIP_SD alarm threshold (10-6 by default) but does not reach the BIP_EXC alarm threshold
(10-3 by default).

Analysis:

The services on the path that reports the BIP_SD alarm degrade.

It's observed through the alarm history that the degradation of the E1 signals occurs when the
BUS_ERR alarm is declared on the CXL boards (on both at the same time, that is, on the
working and protection board).
The BUS_ERR is an alarm of bus errors. This alarm occurs when the cross-connect board
detects that the bus from the service board to the cross-connect board becomes abnormal.

The BUS_ERR alarms appears and dissapears several times during 24 hours and also with
different values in the alarm details:
Analyzing the parameters displayed in the Alarm Details field of the BUS_ERR alarms
above, the following information is obtained:
Therefore, the procedure followed is the one corresponding to Cause 4.

Solution:

1) A cold reset of the active board is performed. Switching occurs between active (80-CXL)
and standby (81-CXL) cross-connect boards. After a succesful cold reset, it is verified that the
alarm is not cleared and both CXL boards (slot 4 & slot 5) display the BUS_ERR alarm.

2) Therefore, the standby CXL board is replaced first, which after the cold reset is the 80-
CXL (slot 4). BUS_ERR alarm is cleared and only persists on the active CXL board (slot 5).

3) Finally, the active CXL board (slot 5) is replaced. BUS_ERR alarm is also cleared.

NOTE: Replacement CXL boards must have the same software (logical) and hardware
(physical) functional version as the CXL boards being replaced.

In summary, after replacing the working and protection cross-connect boards, BUS_ERR and
BIP_SD alarms are cleared and services (E1 signals) degradation dissapears.

That's all, I welcome everyone to leave a message and exchange in the comment
area!

Thank you!
