THERMODYNAMICS 1 [10/20/20]

FYI
1.) When you do/use Energy Balance, remember the following guidelines:
1.1. PE up to FE1 are always at the ENTERING side or in Ein or at the left side
of E.B.
1.2 PE2 up to FE2 are always at the LEAVING side or in Eout or at the right side
of the E.B
NOTE:
You know already that U + FE = H.
1 still applies to Energy Balance formula in terms of H or total enthalpy.

QUESTION: What energies if any, changes position in E.B Formula?

ANSWER: The transition energies, namely, HEAT TRANSFER and MECHANICAL
WORK or POWER.

SYMBOLS:
Q = for heat transfer
Wsf = for mechanical power.

QUESTION: How do we know the direction/location of Q and W sf in E.B formula?

ANSWERS: 1. If the direction/location of Q and Wsf are not clear or not properly specified,
ASSUME Q is ENTERING and Wsf is LEAVING the thermodynamic system under study!
QUESTION: Are there ways of predicting the proper direction of Q and Wsf?
ANSWERS:

NOTES:
So, when the problem says heat added or heat supplied, Q = entering or Ein.
When the problem says heat rejected/remove/loss, Q = leaving or Eout.
Those are the clue/key words.
If the problem gives the name of thermodynamic system, then remember: Q = entering
if the T.S are BOILER, REHEATER, and EVAPORATOR.
If the Thermodynamic System is ADIABATIC, Q = 0 or no heat in E.B!

QUESTION: How about for Wsf, how do we predict its location in E.B?
ANSWER:

Examples of ADIABATIC Thermodynamic System are turbine, compressor, pump.

FYI:
ADIABATIC means Perfectly Insulated or thickly covered. When we say adiabatic, Q =
0.

Warning: You will consider turbine, compressor, and pump ADIABATIC only when the
problem mentioned it. If not, do not consider them adiabatic especially if there is a given
heat loss.
Let us go back to Wsf: Wsf = ENTERING or at the LEFT SIDE of E.B or Ein if the T.S is
POWER CONSUMING MACHINES such as pump, blower, compressor, fan.
Wsf = LEAVING or at the RIGHT side of E.B or Eout if the T.S is POWER PRODUCING
MACHINE such as turbine, engine, or fluid motor (used in hydraulic system).
Wsf = 0 when the T.S is HEAT EXCHANGERS!

QUESTION: Where do we use Energy Balance?

ANSWER:

FYI] If the required in the problem is ENERGY (whether STORED or TRANSITION),

solve it using Energy Balance: Tandaan: " KAPAG ENERGY ANG SULIRANIN, SI E.B
LANG ANG KAKATULUNGIN".

FYI: In this topic and in future subjects, you are required also to construct the BODY'S
ENERGY DIAGRAM = a figure showing all energy form acting on the body or
thermodynamic system under study! The correctness of your answer depends on this
figure.
