Household Electricity Consumption

Operational Definition of terms

Electricity- a fundamental form of energy observable in positive and negative forms
that occurs naturally (as in lightning) or is produced (as in a generator) and that is
expressed in terms of the movement and interaction of electrons.

Energy conservation- is the decision and practice of using less energy. Turning off
the light when you leave the room, unplugging appliances when they're not in use and
walking instead of driving are all examples of energy conservation.

Electricity consumption- represents the amount of electrical energy that has been

consumed over a specific time, in units of Wh (or kWh), electricity demand represents
that rate at which electrical energy is consumed for a needed output rating , in units of W
(or kW).
Energy standard- mandatory programmes (regulations) stipulating the minimum
efficiency levels or maximum energy-use levels acceptable for products sold in a
particular country of region.

Energy label schemes- gives information about the energy consumption of an

electrical appliance so that consumers can decide what model is best to buy.

Gross domestic product (GDP)- is the total monetary or market value of all the
finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific ...

Residential sector- An energy-consuming sector that consists of living quarters for

private households. Common uses of energy associated with this sector include space
heating, water heating, air conditioning, lighting, refrigeration, cooking, and running a
variety of other appliances.

Research Hypothesis
Ho: There is no relationship between electricity consumption and the consumption
characteristics in residential sector.

H1: There is correlation relationship between electricity consumption and the consumption
characteristics in residential sector.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERARURE

The installation of electrical equipment has a strong association with gross

domestic product (GDP), which ultimately increases power use. The findings might be
useful for determining energy requirements, green labeling policies, and power pricing.
In order to reduce CO2 emissions, many researchers analyze the electricity
consumption in households by various methods.( Lü et al., 2012 ). [1] adopted a
physical model to characterize the underlying physical mechanism of energy flows and
then forecast the energy consumption of buildings in consideration of different weather
conditions.( Kondo et al., 2012) [examined the energy and exergy (i.e., available
energy) efficiency of Japan's residential/commercial sectors. The education of electricity
saving has a significant influence on the energy-efficient behavior and awareness.

Until now, electricity is still an essential input for all manufacturing systems and a
necessity for all households today. Electricity consumption may cause not only an
improved living style but also aggravated impacts on the environment due to
inappropriate use (Teodoro et al.,). Hence, relevant energy policies are required to
induce efficient electricity consumption in the residential sector in many countries due to
global warming effects and security of energy supply ( PSE). As the electricity
consumption in the residential sector accounts for about one third of the total electricity
consumption in the world (Santiago et al., 2012), this implies that the electricity
consumption characteristics in the residential sector should be focused (Martin et al.,)

The impact of socioeconomic variables on the installation of electrical appliances

is examined through a correlation test(Norman et al.,). The high electricity-consuming
appliances are selected as the focus group for electricity saving. Electrical appliance
with high correlation coefficient is regarded as more important and prior to the
improvement of electricity saving.
