SCAFFOLDING ERECTION AND DISMANTLING

People involved in this work have different responsibilities. Let’s discuss the responsibilities of every
worker from our company whose are involved in this work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Scaffolder: One who erects and dismantle scaffold, is called Scaffolder. Scaffolder is responsible
for erection and dismantling.
Scaffold Supervisor: Scaffold supervisor have the responsibility of
➢ Material selection and inspection for erection
➢ Doing inspection of scaffolding by Scaffold Inspector and keeping record
➢ Supervise the work of scaffold erection and dismantling
➢ Give instructions to the scaffolders
➢ Ensure safety precautions while scaffolding work is ongoing
Scaffold Inspector: Scaffold inspector have the responsibility of
➢ Inspect the scaffold according to the applicable standard and specifications
➢ Certify the scaffold and maintain the record of it
➢ Reinspect the scaffold if any modification is made and recertify it
Scaffold User: Scaffold users’ responsibilities are
➢ Check the validity of the scaffold from the inspection tag before using it
➢ Do not modify scaffold while working on it. If necessary, inform scaffold supervisor at first.
➢ If one notices any unsafe condition, inform supervisor as fast as possible.
Each and every worker of different position from our company will follow these responsibilities.

Important Things about Scaffold Erection / Dismantling:

Planning: We will make a suitable plan before starting the work and ensure that every person in
the team knows their task and the job to do.
Preparation: We will prepare and stock the materials in a safely manner. Also, will keep notice that
the access to the working site is not blocked.
Communication and Co-ordination: Will maintain proper communication and co-ordination
among the workers so everyone is aware of other people’s tasks and surroundings.
Concentration: We will keep 100% concentration on all tasks involved as it is one of the most
dangerous high-risk job in construction.

Scaffold Erection Guideline:

• Fixing of Plan Bracing: We will fix the of plan bracing so that the scaffolding base get a
fixed dimension.
• Setting up Base Lift: After fixing of plan bracing, we will fix the base lift at a maximum
height of 2 meter.
• Fixing of Bracing: We will fix the bracing in a way that the angle between them will be
35° to 55°.

• Fixing of Plank (Working Platform): We will follow the following steps while fixing plank
➢ All boards will rest squarely and evenly
➢ Each board will have at least 3 supports
➢ The surface of the platform will be even to prevent tripping.
➢ Precautions will be taken to prevent boards lifting in high winds using straps or
clamps

Working Platform Widths:

➢ No boards should overhang by more than 4 times of its thickness. i.e. 150mm for a 38mm
board
➢ 2 boards 400mm minimum width
➢ 3 boards 600mm will be used for stacking materials
➢ 4 boards 800mm will be used for barrows when working with stacked materials
➢ 5 boards 1000mm used by masons

Fixing of Toe boards, Mid rail and Guardrails:

➢ The space between the scaffold and the building should not exceed 300mm.
➢ Toe boards required at outsides and all ends of platforms.
➢ Toe boards should be fitted to the inside of standards.
➢ Toe boards at least 150mm height.
➢ Mid rail at 450 – 550 mm height.
➢ Guardrail at 850-950 mm height.
➢ No gap more than 470 mm.

Scaffold Tie / Support:

➢ Ties should be provided to resist inward and outward movement of independent and tower
scaffolds.
➢ They should have a minimum capacity of 6.25KN.
➢ They will be spaced at 6m intervals horizontally and every second lift vertically.

Height to Width Ratio:

If the scaffolding is inside the building, then the height of the scaffolding will be 4 times more than
the width of the scaffolding base.
Height = Narrowest Base X 4, Ratio = 4 : 1
If the scaffolding is outside the building, then
Height = Narrowest Base X 3.5, Ratio = 3.5 : 1
For mobile scaffolding, Height = Narrowest Base X 3.5, Ratio = 3 : 1

Spacing of Tie:
As per IS 3696 - 1 (1987),

Note: Some safety measures will be taken in the matter of Scaffold Tie.
❖ Ties will only be removed by competent persons.
❖ If it’s necessary to remove, additional ties will be fixed before removal.
❖ Scaffolding will be checked on regular basis and always before dismantling.
❖ Structure used for the tie will be of sufficient strength and rigidity to hold the forces involved.

Safety Guideline and Safe Use of Scaffold:

➢ None can work on the scaffold platform unless one is authorized to do so.
➢ Never throw scaffold materials or any other materials up or down.
➢ None can work at height without wearing safety harness correctly and clipping the lanyard to
a secure anchor point.
➢ None can overload the scaffold while erecting, altering or dismantling with spare materials.
➢ None can modify the scaffold if one is not authorized.
➢ Always check the last inspection date on the “Inspection” tag.
➢ “If the date is longer than 7 days, notify authorized inspector immediately.
➢ Ensure that the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the scaffold is not exceeded.
➢ If anyone detects any faults with a scaffold, even if it has a valid Inspection Tag, report the
problem to the authorized inspector immediately.
➢ None will use scaffold without the approved green Scaff-tag attached.

Preparation Before Dismantling:

• Will provide sufficient space to neatly stack or store the component as they are removed
from the scaffold.
• Will provide proper access while shifting the materials.
• Will inspect the scaffold base so that we can avoid any kind of hazards.
• Will pay particular attention to the scaffold tie and ensure all bracing is complete.
• If necessary, we might stabilize the weakened scaffold before it’s safe to dismantle.
• Will examine all platform for soundness.

Scaffold Dismantling:

• Wear proper safety PPE’s

• Will begin dismantling at the top of scaffold.
• Partially remove the top platform and install it on the lift below.
• Examine scaffold components from damage.
• Neatly store damage free component.
• Don’t remove scaffold tie until the scaffold above the tie has been completely
disassembled to the tie level.
