Parts of an Electrical Wiring Plan
A complete electrical wiring plan is consist of the following:
1. Electrical floor plan. It is a drawing of an area or floor of a building sketched to scale as if viewed
overhead that has electrical symbols.

3. Riser diagram. It is a single line diagram arrangement of the complete electrical circuit from the 4
service entrance up to the smallest circuit branch. It shows the following:
Type of service whether single phase, 2-wire, or 3-wire
Size of service entrance conductor and the type of conduit used
6. Location map. This shows the following details:
Type and size of wire for each branch
Bordering areas showing well-known streets
Size of protective device for main circuit breaker and each branch
Location of the utility company pole which supplies electric energy
7. Circuiting guidelines. The Philippine Electrical Code requirements for circuiting are as follows:
a. The code requires sufficient circuitry to supply residential load of 30 watts per square meter.
b. The requirement for 20-A circuit (2400 W) is 30 W/m2 up to 80 m2 and 60 m2 for 15-A circuit
(1800 W).
c. The code requires a minimum of 20 A for appliance branch to feed all small appliances outlet in
the kitchen, dining and living room.
4. Load schedule. The following details can be seen in the schedule of load:
d. The general purpose branch shall be rated 20 A. Wire AWG 12 is the minimum size of
Number of branch circuit of electrical wiring system
conductor required for all the convenience outlets.
Number of light outlet, power outlet, and switches per branch e. The minimum circuit load of 15 A circuit breaker should be used for light circuit.
Total wattage rating of the load per circuit branch f. Plug outlet or convenience receptacles should be counted in computing the load if it is not in the
Total current load per circuit and size of wire used load of general lighting circuit.
Computation of the total power and current of each circuit branch For 15 A circuit: 9/1.5 = 6 outlets
Size of conduit used for feeder line For 20 A circuit: 12/1.5= 8 outlets
g. Convenience outlet should be planned properly. It should not be placed in one circuit so that the

Lesson 2
Electrical Wiring Diagram. It is a sketch of a lighting circuit or a combination of lighting and power
circuits using electrical symbols. This diagram does not indicate the actual position of electrical fixtures
but it point out the real wiring connections. This diagram can be a simple circuit or a complicated one.
The following are examples of electrical wiring diagrams and their corresponding interpretations:
Now, let’s see how much did you learn to our second module. Get your notebook and answer the
activities below.
