LESSON 1: Estimating Electrical Materials Needed for the Job

I. Objective/s:
1. Prepare a list of materials, equipment and tools needed for the job;
2. Understand and follow electrical wiring diagrams for estimating
materials needed.

II. Guide Questions:

1. What are thing to consider in estimating the electrical materials.
2. How to estimate electrical materials.
III. Discussion:
ESTIMATING ELECTRICAL MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE JOB
Estimating the materials needed to a specific job is very important, so that
we will have the idea of what type of materials to be use, the quality of the
materials and the cost of materials needed.
Estimating electrical materials for the installation of two fluorescent lamps
controlled by two 3 way switches and one single pole single throw switch
using flexible Non-metallic Conduits in a 4’ x 4’ x 3/4” wiring board.
This is an example of a circuit where in the first fluorescent lamps is being
controlled by a single pole single throw switch and the second fluorescent
lamp is being controlled by a two 3 way switch in two locations. This type
of circuit connection where in 3 way switches are used are place like
stairs, hallways and even bedrooms. This type of circuit connection is very
useful and give us convenience in controlling the lamps.
Here is the Single Line diagram of two fluorescent lamps controlled by two
3- way switch and a single pole single throw switch and a table where in
the estimated materials, tools and Personal Protective Equipment are
listed. Study the diagram and the table.

IV. ACTIVITY SHEET 1.4

ESTIMATE ELECTRICAL MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE JOB

Estimate the electrical materials that have been used in the wiring
installation in figure x. Make a table and list all the materials needed and
it’s quantity.

Job specification: Nonmetallic conduit with 4 bulbs assigned as bulb A,

B, C and D. Bulb A is controlled in 3 locations by one 4-way switch (S4W)
and two 3- way (S3W) switches. Bulb B to D connected in parallel each
controlled by a single pole. The size of the wiring board is 4’ x 4 x ¾”
plywood.
