Concept Notes
HAND TOOLS
Hand tools are usually light and are used without the help of machines. They are being used in installing electrical
non-metallic conduit as physical pathway for electrical wirings. (i.e. pipe cutter, electrician’s knife, hacksaw, diagonal cutting
plier, etc.)
• Pipe cutter is heavy duty and can cut thickly moulded pipes in a quick and convenient manner.
• Electrician’s knife is designed to cut electrical insulation, cables, insulation, Flexible non-metallic conduit and more.
• Hacksaw a saw with a narrow fine-toothed blade set in a frame, used especially for cutting metal.
• Diagonal cutting pliers are used for cutting wires, screws and nails.

Question/s
Direction – Copy and answer the following questions on your separate answer sheet.
Identify and name the parts of the following tools.
_________1. It is used for cutting of wires, screws and nails.
_________2. It has a narrow fine-toothed blade set in a frame that is used in cutting metal.
_________3. It is designed to cut electrical insulation, cables, insulation, flexible non-metallic conduit.

Concept Notes

As previous activity in the last meeting, you have identified some of the different hand tools that are essentials for
you to have to perform in installing electrical non-metallic PVC conduit. Those are the pipe cutter, electrician’s knife,
hacksaw, and the diagonal cutting plier. And so for these activity, you will continue to identify some of the useful hand tools
for you to know. Here are the following;
• Claw Hammer is a tool primarily used for driving nails into, or pulling nails from some other object.
• Phillips screwdriver that is designed to be used with a type of screw (called a Phillips-head screw) that has a slot in its
top that looks like a cross.
• Wire stripper this is a tool used for removing insulation of medium sized wires raging from gauge #10 to gauge #16.
• Spirit level bubble level or simply a level is an instrument designed to indicate whether a surface is horizontal (level) or
vertical (plumb).

Materials: LAS, SDLM
Concept Notes

Steel tape (Pull-push rule)

One of the most essential tool for you to have in installing electrical non-metallic conduit as physical pathway for
electrical wiring is the Steel tape or pull-push rule. It is a measuring tape that coils into a compact case. It is used for measuring
long, short, straight lengths, and can also measure curved and irregular surfaces. It has two units of measurements in one
side which is the English system composed of inches and foot and the other side is the metric system which is the millimeter,
centimeter, decimeter and meter. It comes in lengths from five or six feet up to twenty-five feet. It can also be purchased in
metric lengths. A practical size for most home applications is three-quarters of an inch wide and twelve or sixteen feet long.
Below are the examples on how to read the English and Metric System in the pull-push rule as shown in the pictures.

Learning Target/Objective: Describe the multi-tester. Identify the parts of a multi-tester.
Activity Title: Describing the multi-tester. Identifying the parts of a multi-tester.
Materials: LAS, SDLM
Concept Notes

MULTI TESTER
The Multitester or multimeter is sometimes called the VOM (voltmeter, ohmmeter, milliammeter). It is the best
instrument that can measure voltage, resistance and current. It is generally made of two types: the analog and the digital.

PARTS OF A MULTI TESTER

• POINTER - the needle-shaped rod that moves over the scale of a meter. It is mechanically connected to the moving
coil. It indicates the measured values on the multimeter.
• RANGE SELECTOR KNOB (Selector switch) - makes it possible to select different functions and range of the meter.
• Adjustment screw - makes it possible to adjust the pointer to the zero position of the scale.
• SCALE - a series of marking used for reading the value of a quantity. Has different types of scale, for voltage and
current readings the scales have mostly linear which means equal division.
• Test probe positive (red), negative (black) - used to connect the circuit to the electrical components being tested.
• Zero-ohm adjusting Knob - used to zero-in the pointer before measuring resistance.
