INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

Sad to think and say that our environment has continued to be destroyed and
ruined caused by human activities. They have directly experienced the horrible and
extreme damages inflicted on humanity. Consequently, humanity able to reflect on the
real situations of the environment as well as the actions and solutions in response to
the growing environmental problems. Whether they like it or not, they have to value
and preserve the environment from their different innovations and actions. However,
they may do all those things positively regarding the environment if they are backed
up by different environmental philosophy.
One of them is the environmentalism that becomes the root and basis to
generate several views toward valuing and preserving the environment. In this
perfective, it raises the environmental awareness to protect and serve the environment
because it was given and entrusted by God to humanity as His steward of
creation/nature.

In this module, you will identify how humanity can address the damage to the
environment and the development of ethical views regarding the environment. This
helps you to become aware of the environment as well as how to respond and take
action in protecting and preserving the environment.

What Is It?
The Scope of the Human Person in the Environment
A. How can humanity address the damage inflicted on the environment?

One important development that arose during the late twentieth century was
environmentalism. This perspective advocate addressing growing environmental
problems. Philosophy has a significant role in the development of environmental
awareness and actions. Several ideas and perspectives regarding environmental
actions emerged.
One important philosophical view of environmentalism is environmental ethics.
This is a moral approach that examines the relationship between humans and the
environment. It also addresses environmental problems caused by human activities
and social issues that impact the environment.

Philo. Q1. Wk.10 Marlon Q. Tiña

Through the different views regarding the environment, humanity has been
encouraged to value and regard the environment because if they do not do something
good for the environment, they will be affected by more horrible and extreme damages.
Aside from that, many environmental views continue emerging in response to the
several damages inflicted on them such as poverty, pollution deforestation, global
warming, climate change, etc. Because of environmentalism, there are collective
actions initiated and done by humanity from public, private, and different
organizations to combat and address the growing environmental problems.
B. The Development of Ethical Views regarding the environment
Around the 1970s, environmental ethics emerged in advocating responsibility
and action concerning environmental issues, its main ideas are the following: (1). All
elements of the world whether human or non-human, including animals and natural
resources, have natural value and should be preserved; (2) The preservation of the
environment will benefit humans by providing for the needs of present and future
generations.

Environmental ethics has resulted in the development of various views: (1)

Social ecology applies an ecological and ethical approach in analyzing society and sees
a relationship between social problems and environmental problems. Society should,
therefore, implement changes to address issues regarding the environment.; (2)
Concept such as climate change and climate justice arose from the growing concerns
with climate change, and consider it a significant ethical, social, and political issue.
These views were greatly influenced by the concept of environmental justice, which
refers to the fair distribution of environmental benefits, as well as burdens of meeting
environmental challenges.; and (3) Environmental aesthetics originally focused on
concepts of beauty in nature, but has become increasingly influenced by
environmental concerns.

There are many important events empowered by the various philosophical views
regarding the environment. This is the reason for awakening the consciousness ad
awareness of humanity from several organizations locally and internationally,
governments, and countries to respond to protecting and preserving the environment.
There are also several policies and laws enacted to address environmental problems.
One of them was the declaration of Earth day which first held in 1970, which is a
global effort to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire action among
communities.
