COMMUNICATION

DEVICES TO ACCESS
AND EXCHANGE
INFORMATION
Electrical and Electronics Technology
Mr. Hugh McDermott
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students should be able
to:
• define the term network as it relates to
information communication. .
• list the three main types of networks that exists.
• discuss the three main types of networks that
exists.
• define the term data communication.
• explain the different data communication
connections that are used to access and exchange
information.
INTRODUCTORY Research the following terms:
ACTIVITY • Internet Protocol
• Intranet (LAN)
• Extranet (WAN)
• Internet
• Fibre communications
• WIFI
• GPRS
• Dial-connection
DEFINITION • A computer network is
OF a system in which
multiple computers are
NETWORK connected to each
other to share
information and
resources.
TYPES OF • Communication Networks can be
any of following 5 types:
COMMUNICATION ❑Local Area Network (LAN)
NETWORKS ❑Metropolitan Area Network
(MAN)
❑Wide Area Network (WAN)
❑Wireless
❑Inter Network (Internet)
• A local area network (LAN) is a group
Intranet of computers and PERIPHERAL
DEVICES that share a common
(LAN) communications line or wireless link to
a server within a distinct geographic
area.
EXTRANET • An extranet is a controlled private network
allowing customers, partners, vendors,
(WAN) suppliers and other businesses to gain
information, typically about a specific company
or educational institution, and do so without
granting access to the organization's entire
network.

• An extranet is often a private part of a website.

It is restricted to select users through user IDs,
passwords and other authentication
mechanisms on a login page.
EXAMPLES • A SCHOOLS WEBSITE
OF
• BANK WEBSITE
EXTRANET
(WAN) • E BAY
• AMAZON
Internet • The internet is a globally connected
network system facilitating worldwide
communication and access to data
resources through a vast collection of
private, public, business, academic and
government networks.

• It is governed by agencies like the Internet

Assigned Numbers Authority (or IANA)
that establish universal protocols.
COMMUNICATION
Definition of • Communication is the process of sharing
a message. A conversation between two
communication people is an example of communication.
• Data communications refers to the
sharing of a virtual message.

• Data communications refers to the

transmission of digital data between
two or more computers and a
computer network or data network is a
telecommunications network that
allows computers to exchange data.
FIBER • Fiber Communication is the

COMMUNICATION which signal is transmitted in the

method of communication in

form of light and optical fiber is

used as a medium of transmitting
those light signal from one place to
another.
• The signal transmitted in optical
fiber is converted from the
electrical signal into light and at
the receiving end, it is converted
back into the electrical signal from
the light.
How does • The Optical fiber communication
process transmits a signal in the form
Fiber-Optic of light which is first converted into the
Communicatio light from electrical signals and
transmitted, and then vice versa
n works happens on the receiving side.
WIFI
• Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology
that uses radio waves to provide wireless

(WLAN)
high-speed Internet access.
• A common misconception is that the
WIRELESS term Wi-Fi is short for “wireless fidelity,”
LOCAL AREA however Wi-Fi is a trademarked phrase
NETWORK that refers to IEEE 802.11x standards.
• It specifically defines Wi-Fi as any
“wireless local area network (WLAN)
products that are based on the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’
(IEEE) 802.11 standards.”
• General Packet Radio System is also

GPRS known as GPRS is a third-

generation (3G) step toward

General • The GPRS specifications are written

internet access.

Packet Radio by the European

Service Telecommunications Standard
Institute (ETSI), the European
counterpart of the American
National Standard Institute (ANSI).
Dial-up • Dial-up refers to an Internet
connection that is established using a
Connection modem.
• The modem connects the computer to
standard phone lines, which serve as
the data transfer medium.
• When a user initiates a dial-up
connection, the modem dials a phone
number of an Internet Service Provider
(ISP) that is designated to receive dial-
up calls.
ACTIVITY 1. Of the networks discussed. Which
of them will be used for:
a) a school.
b) a bank’s ATM system.

2. Give the meaning for the following

abbreviations:
a) WI-FI
b) GPRS
ACTIVITY 3. Telephone companies like
FLOW or Digicel provides
internet to students and
families for home schooling.
How does that work and
what type of internet
connection are you
receiving?
SUMMARY
• A network is a system in which multiple computers are
connected to each other to share information and
resources.
• There are five main types of computer networks that
can be utilized: Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan
Area Network (MAN), Wide Area Network (WAN),
Wireless and Inter Network (Internet).
• Data communications refers to the sharing of a virtual
message.
• Data can be transmitted via fibre optics, wireless, GPRS
or dial-up connection.
