1ST Semester of A.Y. 2021-2022

Introduction
Extemporaneous speeches allow speakers only a few minutes of preparation. Such time
pressure forces speakers to think fast and deliver their ideas afterward, sticking to the
outline. Extemporaneous speeches are valuable because even if they allow little time to
organize ideas, they do not limit a speaker’s spontaneity.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Module, students should be able to:

 Brainstorm and decide upon a topic that is interesting to both speaker and the audience.
 Research using traditional and non-traditional sources.
 Write an intriguing introduction and conclusion
 Practice non-verbal cues, such as smiling, eye contact, gesturing, etc. Via online.
 Deliver an extemporaneous speech for no more than 7 minutes.
 Evaluate other speeches and provide positive feedback.

COU SPEECH 3 – MODULE 1
DEFINE THE TOPIC
RSE
Before you can relate ideas to aa topic, you must first have a clear understanding of the
MOD topic. If you are engaged in extemporaneous speaking, the topic will definitely be given, and
it will not be something you cannot relate to.
ULE FIND WORDS OR IDEAS RELATED TO THE TOPIC

Once you have understood what the topic is about, find words or ideas related to the topic.
Fortunately, the definition itself is one of the first ideas you can relate to it.

Reflect on the topic and see if you can relate it to your life. Mention why you find the topic
relevant to you. A personal connection to a topic makes a speech sound more engaging and
interesting.

ONCE YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE LIST, DECIDDE WHICH IDEAS YOU WILL SAY FIRST
AND WHICH YOU WILL SAY LAST.

This third step is at the heart of organizing ideas. You must now determine the logical
sequence of ideas. Here are some ways to organize your thoughts;

1. positive ideas then negative ideas

2. general ideas then specific
3. problem then solution
4. definition then example

REARRANGE THE IDEAS IN OUTLINE FORM

Rewrite your initial draft or ideas after you have decided on the sequence. Once the outline
is final, think of sentences or paragraphs to use in delivering the extemporaneous speech.

DELIVERING EXTEMPORANEOUSLY

Unlike impromptu speech, where you are often not allowed to bring notes, extemporaneous
speech allows you to have at least a small index card or a piece of paper where your outline
is written.

When delivering extemporaneously, remember the following:

COU SPEECH 3 – MODULE 1
RSE 1. Glance sparingly at your notes. Remember that eye contact is very important to ensure an
engaging performance in front of your audience. Hence, you must focus more on them than
on your notes. A fast pair of eyes will be very handy especially if you can read the keywords
MOD in less than a second. Seeing the keywords would be enough for you to remember what to
say next.
ULE 2. Avoid long pauses. Try not to be obvious when you are struggling with your thoughts. Do
not use long pauses that will lessen your audience’s interest.

3. Be natural and conversational. Rehearsed and memorized speeches are noticeably more
mechanical. Use words that come directly from the mind and heart.
