PURPOSE

 Measure the speed of a wave within a coiled spring toy.

 Predict whether the speed you measured will be different in other types of coiled spring toys.

HYPOTHESIS
If a coil is long, slender, and light then the there will be a lot of waves produced with high speed.

DATA

This section presents the transverse wave data and calculation from the experiment to compare
wave properties such as speed of the wave with a different amplitude.

TABLE 1

Table 1 presents the measured length of string was stretched, numbers of crests/frequency,
wavelength, number of vibrations timed, number of seconds were timed, and wave speed. Several
attempts were made to calculate the obtained data presented in the table.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

This section includes the interpretation and discussion of data and how evidence from the data
supports the conclusion.

The Slinky toy or also known as a “coiled spring toy” is a simple toy that is made of coiled
spring that is usually enjoyed by kids and enjoyed by actions that could possibly make it walk, jump,
bounce and such. As mentioned from the recent discussion, coiled spring toy can be used for further
model transverse waves experiment. Since that the particles of the strings move back and forth parallel
to the strings. Coiled spring toy is counted with 77 coils, each has 2.5 diameter and when compressed it
is 2.25 inches long.

In our final analysis, as for the 1st trial of performing this experiment. We sustained the wave
speed for 1.67 m/s, as of trial 1. Meanwhile, as the wavelength in our 2nd trial occurred differently
compared to the 1st trial we have had, since it increased, our wave speed was also measured increased

as of 2.01 m/s. At this point in time, for our 3rd and last trial, we noticed that the wavelength decreased
instantly compared to our 1st and 2nd trial. From the wavelength of 2.78m and 4.02m, it went out with
1.23m wavelength and so therefore the wave speed for our last trial also decreased.

CONCLUSION

The conducted experiment showed that the length of the coiled spring toy had no effect on the
wave speed because, as the coiled spring toy is stretched at different lengths, the wave speed stays close
to the wave speed that is reflected on each trial. The number of seconds the vibrations lasted was
altered by variations in the length of the coiled spring toy, but not the wave speed. A wave's wavelength
does not affect speed at which the wave travels. So, it has the least effect on the wave speed. Waves A
and B move at the same rate. Changes in the qualities of the medium through which a wave travels are
the sole factors that affect its speed.

Wave speed is the distance a wave travels in a given amount of time, such as the number of
meters it travels per second. The factors that might affect this are the frequency and wavelength since
they were connected by the equation SPEED=WAVELENGTH X FREQUENCY. The alteration in
wavelength does not affect the wave speed but rather the alteration in frequency because the
wavelength affects the frequency in an inverse manner that is why doubling of wavelength can make
the frequency into half. This could also mean that the wave speed is affected by the frequency in a
directly proportional manner, meaning, an increase in frequency is also an increase in wave speed and
vice versa.
