Problems involving transmission of pressure in liquids.

Worked Example

1. In the hydraulic braking system of a car, a force of 15N is exerted over an area of 0.025m2 at
the small piston.
a) Calculate the pressure.[3]
𝐹
Ps = [ 𝐴
] N/m2
15
Ps = [ 0.025
] N/m2
Ps = 600 N/m2

b) What is the pressure on the large piston?

Pressure on the large piston = pressure on the small piston
= 600 N/m2

c) Compare the force on the small piston with the force on the large piston.
The force on the large piston is very large compared to the force on the small piston because it
has a larger surface area.

2. In the hydraulic braking system of a car, a force of 20N is exerted over an area of 0.04m2 at
the small piston.
a) Calculate the pressure.[3]
𝐹
Ps = [ 𝐴
] N/m2
20
Ps = [ 0.04
] N/m2
Ps = 500 N/m2

b) What is the pressure on the large piston?

Pressure on the large piston = pressure on the small piston
= 500 N/m2

c) Compare the force on the small piston with the force on the large piston.
The force on the large piston is very large compared to the force on the small piston because it
has a larger surface area.
