Quarter 3 - Module 2
Proving Theorems on the Different
Kinds of Parallelogram
(Rectangle, Rhombus, Square)
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Theorems on Rectangle, Rhombus and Square
Today we are going to deal with the theorems on rectangle, rhombus and square. The
activity a while ago introduces you to the different types of parallelogram.
How can we identify that the given parallelogram is a rectangle, a rhombus or a
square? Below are the theorems that prove the characteristics of each parallelogram.
Theorems on Rectangle
Theorem 1.
If a parallelogram has a right angle, then it has four right angles and the
parallelogram is a rectangle.
Proof:
Statements Reasons
1. Rectangle FACE is a parallelogram with
1. Given
∠F is a right angle.
2. m∠F = 90 2. Definition of right angle
3. In a parallelogram, opposite angles
3. ∠F ≅ ∠C, ∠A ≅ ∠E
are congruent.
4. m∠F = m∠C
4. Definition of congruent angles.
m∠A = m∠E
5. m∠C = 90 5. Substitution (2 and 4)
6. Consecutive angles of parallelogram
6. m∠F + m∠A = 180
are supplementary
7. 90 + m∠A = 180 7. Substitution (2 and 6)
8. 90 = 90 8. Reflexive Property
9. m∠A = 90 9. Subtraction Property (7 and 8)
10. m∠E = 90 10. Substitution (4 and 9)
11. If the measure of an angle is 90,
11. ∠A, ∠C, ∠E are right angles.
then it is a right angle.
12. FACE is a rectangle. 12. Definition of rectangle.

AK
Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC)
Example 1:
Answer:
a. OP measures 7 cm because opposite sides of rectangle are congruent.
b. OE measures 12 cm because diagonals of rectangle are congruent.
c. ̅̅̅̅
EO, one of the diagonals of rectangle HOPE, serves as the hypotenuse of the right triangle
EPO. It can be solved using Pythagorean theorem 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 where c is the hypotenuse
and a and b are the legs.
(EO)2 = (EP)2 + (OP)2
EO = √(12)2 + (5)2
EO = √144 + 25
EO = √169
EO = 13 cm
o
d. Angle 3 measures 50 because each interior angle of a rectangle is equal to 90 degrees.
e. The measure of ∠5 is 35o also because vertical angles are congruent.
5
Example 2:
Solution:
The diagonals of a rectangle are congruent. We need to find the value of x so that ̅̅̅̅
QS ≅ ̅̅̅̅
RT.
QS = RT Set the diagonal lengths equal.
5x - 31 = 2x + 11 Substitute 5x – 31 for QS and 2x + 11 for RT.
3x - 31 = 11 Subtract 2x from each side.
3x = 42 Add 31 to each side.
x = 14 Divide both sides by 3
Theorems on Rhombus
Theorem 3.

4. LHE ≅ EAL 4. SSS Congruence Postulate
5. Corresponding Parts of Congruent
5. ∠1 ≅ ∠2; ∠3 ≅ ∠4
Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC)
Example 3:
Answer:
a. m∠1 = 90 The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular.
b. m∠2 = 61 Alternate Interior Angles Theorem
c. m∠3 = 61 Each diagonal of a rhombus bisects a pair of opposite
angles, and m∠2 = 61
d. m∠1 + m∠3 + m∠4 = 180 Triangle Sum Theorem (1800)
90 + 61 + m∠4 = 180 Substitute 90 for m∠1 and 61 for m∠3
m∠4 = 29 Solve for m∠4
7
Example 4:
Given rhombus EFGH with EH = 2y + 3 and HG = 5y - 6.
Find the value of y and the length of each side of the rhombus.
Solution:
Recall that a rhombus is a parallelogram with four congruent sides.
Square
The square is the most special parallelogram because all the properties of
parallelograms and the theorems on rectangles and rhombuses are true to
all squares.
Example 5:
Refer to square FAIT. Consider each given individually.
a. If FI= 14 inches, what is the measure of AT?
b. If HF = 7.5 inches, what is the measure of HI?
c. If AT = 18 inches, FH measures _____.
d. If the measure of ∠2 is 45o, the measure of ∠FAI is _____.
e. What is the measure of ∠3?
Answer:
a. The measure of AT is 14 inches because diagonals of a square are equal.
b. The measure of HI is 7.5 inches because diagonals of a square bisect each other.
c. The measure of FH is 9 inches because diagonals of a square bisect each other.
d. The measure of ∠FAI is 90o because all angles of a square are right angles.
e. Angle 3 measures 90o because diagonals of a square are perpendicular.
8
Example 6:
Solution:
Recall that a square is a parallelogram with four congruent sides.
HT = AT Set the sides of the square equal.
8x - 13 = 7x + 11 Substitute 8x - 13 for HT and 7x + 11 for AT.
x - 13 = 11 Subtract 7x from each side.
x = 24 Add 13 to each side.
