Health, as defined by WHO, is the

state of physical, mental, social and


emotional well being.
It is the state where the body
functions in the best manner
possible.
Factors promoting physical health are:
● A balanced diet
● Clean surroundings
● Immunization of the self
● Personal hygiene
● Exercise of the body
● Sound sleep

A happy social environment, good


economic conditions, healthy
relationships promote social, mental and
emotional health.
Disease, as defined by WHO , is the
state where the body does not
function in an optimum manner,
physically, mentally, socially and
emotionally.
Disease is ‘disturbed ease’.

Anything that will prevent the cells


and tissues from functioning
properly will lead to the body not
working in the best manner
possible.
Factors promoting a diseased
condition are:
● Imbalanced diet
● Poor sanitation
● Poor hygiene
● Unclean habits
● Unsafe drinking water
● Lack of exercise and
adequate sleep
● Unhappy social
environment
Symptoms of a disease are the
indications that all is not well with the
body, the feeling of something being
‘wrong’ e.g. body ache, loss of appetite,
mild fever, weakness, dizziness etc.
They may be common to many
diseases. They do not indicate what
type of disease it is only that there may
be a disease.
Signs of a disease are the specific indications of
a disease. They are unique to the disease.

E.g. a persistent cough, blood in the sputum,


pain in the chest are the signs of Pulmonary
tuberculosis. ● Decreases morbidity
Jaundice, dark urine, low grade fever, extreme ● Decreases mortality

weakness are the signs of Hepatitis A.

A doctor confirms a particular disease on the


basis of the signs of the disease and laboratory
tests conducted.
