Accomplishment Instructions:
1. Place unit on workstation and remove two screws (1-15), four flat washers (1-30), two lock washers
(1-25), two nuts (1-20) and assembly cover (1-5).
2. Rotate the unit as shown in IPL Figure 1 to inspect the wiring. Note how the wire routing has been
done. Refer to Figure 1 of this bulletin for examples of preferred wire routing. Routing in Figure
1C is the preferred routing to maintain the maximum amount of electrical clearance.
3. If battery (2-10) wire routing can not be determined to be completely in accordance with Figure 1 of
this service bulletin, then continue with disassembly by removing the 12 individual batteries (2-10),
as necessary, in accordance with the instruction stated in the REPAIR section of the referenced
component maintenance manual.
4. If battery wire routing can not be determined to be in compliance with Figure 1, disassemble unit per
instructions stated in the REPAIR section of the maintenance manual until batteries can be inspected
for compliance. Redress wires and wire routing with a non-conductive tool using the following
guidelines:
D. Always maintain appropriate electrical isolation between positive wires with respect to
negative wires and any portion of the frame.
Service Bulletin SB-501-1228-14B
5. The preferred position of each wire with service loop is shown in Figure 1C. The black wire will
always be the wire that proceeds across the battery top. As these wire are pulled and attached to
their respective holes for soldering, the red will tighten up on the positive terminal, and the black to
the negative terminal. Conversely, when routed as shown in Figure 1B, the red wire would be pulled
toward the negative terminal.
6. The very long black wire attached to the negative terminal of battery in assembly position 3 (IPL
Figure 2) from fuse F1 (2-160A) may be longer than required. This wire should exit directly out
toward the support assembly (2-35) and be channeled down toward the fuse. Extra wire slack should
be formed into an “S” loop at the top edge of the applicable battery between the terminals.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN PLACING THE A1 BATTERY ASSEMBLY (1-10) INTO THE COVER (1-
5) AND GOVERN THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE COVER (1-5) AS IT PASSES OVER
THE EDGE OF A2 BATTERY MONITOR CCA (3-1). SOMETIMES THE SIDE OF THE
COVER MUST BE PULLED OUT SLIGHTLY TO OBTAIN FULL SEATING OF THE COVER (1-
5).
7. Once all batteries (2-10) have been redressed or replaced (not recommended to exceed four batteries
without replacing all batteries) in accordance with the instructions stated in the REPAIR section of
the referenced manual, proceed to the ASSEMBLY section of the referenced manual and complete
the assembly.
8. Complete the bench test requirements found in the TESTING PROCEDURES paragraph of this
service bulletin.
Service Bulletin SB-501-1228-14B
Testing Procedures: Perform the bench test requirements contained in the TESTING
AND FAULT ISOLATION section of the referenced manual.
Identification Procedures: Mark off MOD 5 on the identification plate (1-100) using the
same color ink or paint previously used.

Original Date: September 1, 1981
NOTE: Revision A updates the service letter’s format to current standards and adds or
corrects information concerning the PS-835 () and its optional models.
Effectivity: PS-835 ()
Advisory:
A. On new installations and retrofits from PS-823 () to PS-835 () and SI-100 () inverter. The test
circuit must be wired as shown below:
Test Test
Lamp Lamp

Figure 1
B. Operation: Remove 28 Vdc input power to the PS-835 () pin 10 before testing. Activate the test
switch. The test lamp will illuminate if the battery voltage is greater than 24 Vdc.
NOTE: At this time the batteries are loaded by the internal 7.4 ± 0.5 Ω etched foil heater
resistor. The test does not indicate the heater is operating. Heater operation may be
checked by measuring the input current to J1-10 as the test switch is activated (28
Vdc applied to input J1-10). The current will increase approximately 3.0 A dc
when the heater is operating properly and the internal temperature is less than
55°C. The heater is normally off unless the internal temperature is below 20°C.
C. When the test switch is released, the test lamp will extinguish. Reapply 28Vdc input power.

Revision Date: August 7, 2000 SL-109A
Original Date: March 3, 1989
Purpose: Inform users and service centers of the merits of using Avionics Systems
inspected cells.
Advisory:
Avionics Systems recommends that when having a PS-823 () or PS-835 () emergency power supply
repaired or serviced, users specify that if any replacements for the Ni Cad or Lead-acid batteries be
required, only Avionics Systems inspected replacements are used.
Avionics Systems has determined that cells passing our inspection criteria have longer life than cells
obtained without being inspected to our standards.
Avionics Systems maintains rigid inspection and operation criteria for parts installed in our products
or provided for replacement use. Through this process, we eliminate substandard parts, which could
lead to premature failures of equipment. It is for that reason we recommend that our equipment be
repaired with only factory authorized replacements.
As always, when replacing individual cells, all cells in the power supply must be of the same type
and vendor as the original cells. The same is true when replacing all cells in a power supply.

Revision History: Rev. A-- (February 24, 2011)
SL-264 (Rev. B)
May 6, 2011
NOTE
Revision B to this service letter adds a note to discuss changes to the
availability of old and new replacement cells and updates the advisory
paragraph by identifying old replacement cells as “alternate” and new
replacement cells as “preferred alternate”.
NOTE
The stock of the new replacement cells is currently limited. The
factory will continue to sell and stock the old replacement cells,
but plans to switch to the new replacement cells in the near future
and purchase of the old replacement cells will eventually end
when stock is depleted. In addition the old replacement cells will
eventually be “superseded” by the new replacement cells
sometime after January 1, 2012.
Approval: This Service Letter contains no modification information that revises the
approved configuration and therefore does not require government or other
regulatory agency approval.
Export Compliance: This technical data has been released into the public domain in compliance
with EAR Part 734.7-11.
Service Letter SL-264 (Rev. B)
Advisory: Replacement cells are individually tested. Those cells meeting or exceeding
the requirements are re-identified with the part numbers shown in the table
below. By shipping only cells marked with the (549-1170-xx or 549-1548-
xx) part number, we are assured that all cells leaving our facility meet the
standards necessary for use in the PS-835(). Cells identified with 559-1601-
xx or 559-1602-xx are interchangeable with cells marked according to the
following:
The sealed lead-acid cells are delivered in a charged condition. These cells
are sealed at the time of battery manufacture, and cannot be kept in a
discharged state for longer than 48 hours (less if connected to a load), to
prevent chemical changes within the cell that would shorten the cell's life.
The factory recommends that when any PS-835( ) pack has more than 4
defective cells; all 12 cells should be replaced.
NOTE
Replacement cells must be of the same cell manufacturer as the
cells being replaced.
Only cells authorized by the factory are listed in the Detailed Parts List
contained in the PS-835 Maintenance Manual, TP-329. These cells have
been tested to insure the PS-835( ) will deliver the specified performance.
Service centers are required by the FAA to perform maintenance and repair
work on the PS-835 Emergency Power Supply in accordance with this
manual.
For additional assistance call L-3 Avionics Systems, Customer Service (800-453-0288 or 616-949-6600).
