Purpose

This document provides instructions for a temporary corrective action on QSK60-

D(M) applications that trip the 15 amp main fuses located on the Power Supply
Management System (PSMS) module which is installed in the Customer
Interface Box (CIB).

Introduction

Some of the QSK60-D(M) installations have experienced problems with fuses

tripping when the CIB master switch is turned on. The fuse issue typically occurs
during the first CIB master switch activation after installation. It also may occur
when the CIB master switch is first cycled after sitting for long periods without
switched power. See Figure 1 below for the location of the PSMS.

Discussion

The PSMS circuit board main fuses are rated at 15 amps and are labeled as F1
& F2 on the circuit board. The root cause of the main fuse tripping behavior is
due to a circuit within the PSMS circuit board. The circuit creating the issue is in
place to protect CIB components from an over-voltage condition.

There have been two versions of the PSMS circuit board released into
production. Both versions have an over-voltage protection circuit, which is the
culprit in tripping the main fuses. These circuit boards can be identified by part
number 4927265 or 4978808. They may also be visually compared to those
shown Figures 2 & 3 below.

The recommended temporary corrective action is to disable the over-voltage
protection circuit within the PSMS module. Please follow the procedure below to
perform the repair.

Procedure:
• Disconnect power from panel
• Verify power is off by testing for voltage at terminals 300 through
303 with a volt meter
o Tips
ƒ Removal of module main fuses F1 & F2 is not
recommended due to exposed terminals and the
potential for shorting
ƒ The module may also be removed from the panel to
ease modification, but be sure to mark wire
termination locations before removal to simplify
reinstallation
• Cut the diodes labeled D1 & D2 (see circled items in Figure 1).The
diodes are black cylindrical components marked with a silver band
at one end. Trim as close to the circuit board as possible. Take
care not to damage any other nearby components. A small pair of
side cut pliers is recommended.
• Remove the diode completely, to prevent shorting or re-insertion
into the circuit.
• Modification is now complete. Reinstall any removed wires and
apply power as normal.

Conclusion

The PSMS module is currently undergoing improvements to address this issue,

but they have not yet been implemented into production. The recommended
temporary corrective action is to disable the over-voltage protection circuit. The
PSMS will continue to protect the CIB components from over-current damage.
