Lesson plan for October 3-7, 2022

Grade: 4
Subject: Resource and Technology
Duration: 1 hour
Strand: Creativity and Innovations and Explore Methods and Procedures
Focus Question: How can I convert waste material into treasure?
Attainment Targets:
 Through a project-based approach students will be able to apply creativity and innovation
to design solutions to the problem of environmental waste.
 Through a project-based approach, students will be able to explore methods and
procedures in solving problems relating to environmental waste.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson students should be able to:
 Discuss the importance of recycling to the environment.
 Identify ways to solve problems associated with environmental waste.
 Collect recycled materials suitable for making flowers and floral arrangements.
Content:
Waste- use or expend carelessly, extravagantly, or to no purpose.
Pollution- The presence, or introduction into the environment of a substance which has harmful
or poisonous effects.
greenhouse gas- a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation.
Carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons are examples of greenhouse gases.
Recycling - is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of
potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, energy usage, air
pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling) by decreasing the need for
"conventional" waste disposal and lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to plastic
production.
Teaching and Learning Activities: Students will:
Engage: View a music video of the song “Nuh Dutty up Jamaica” and sing along.
Explore: students placed in groups will look around the school yard and collect as many things
that can be reused in 2 minutes. The group with the most items collected within the allotted time
will win.
Explain: students in groups will discuss and write down what each item they collected can be
reused for and will be required to share their ideas with the class.
Elaborate: students will be asked to give their views from articles they read on the state of the
environment, and discuss potential problems to the environment as a result of waste. Discuss
innovative and creative ways of solving the problem of environmental waste. In groups create a
song or poem about recycling and present it to the class.
Evaluate: Student’s oral presentation about recycling and the environment.
