UV Camera Photography

Forensics Technician, Bachelor’s in Science

SIP 409
Assignment: SIP Brief
October 30, 2022
Technical Field
My major is Forensics Technician. Currently, I am going for my bachelor’s degree. I do not have
a lot of hands-on experience, with taking things apart and putting them together, but my project
idea is to eventually create a camera flash that works with a certain lens. It will have UV inserted
in the flash and will be able to take pictures without the need of a UV lamp. I want to be able to
create one single invention from two inventions. I feel like if this does not work, I will at least try
to implement small UV lights onto the camera. Like I described earlier, I do not have a lot of
hands-on experience, but I will do my best to get my prototype going. 10/23/2022.

Background Information
I got inspired to come up with this idea because my major requires for us to be able to obtain
evidence, and make sure the evidence is valid in a court of law. Even if that evidence is
photographic. I am a person who loves to take photographic pictures and am comfortable with
the work I do. I believe a camera is perfect as it is, but it can still be perfected into something
greater. I want to create something that one day will become a great help to forensic specialist.
My goal is to make it functional to the point that it can take blue light pictures right of the bat.
(9/28/2022). This is the reason for my SIP idea, I think it would be a great contribution to
society.

Prior Art (legal term)

 My prior art is inspired by something that I read in an article, it stated: “Reflected UV
photography involves illuminating a subject directly with UC emitting lamps, or by using
strong natural sunlight. A special transmitting filter is usually placed in front of the
camera's lens which allows UV light to pass through while absorbing or blocking out
visible and infrared light”.
 I believe that by creating something like this it will require a lot of research. It also leads
me to think, why not put both inventions into one to make a photographic camera flash
and lens with also UV capability. It will just require a camera and a lot of work with
different lenses and tweaking the flash in the camera. I am going to try different ways to
get it to work. Another idea I have is to try and add colored film onto the lens or the flash.
These are just some other ideas. 9/28/2022.

 The prior art I was recommended was a product from Nikon. Nikon has created a product
that has a lens for ultraviolet light.
 Currently these are the features it has:
 For photographing in the ultraviolet light.
 No focus correction required at the time of photographing UV when you focus under
visible light.
 High transmittance rate (approx. 70%) in the wide range of high wavelength 220 nm -
900 nm.
 Minimal distortion at the magnification ∞ - -0.5x

Project Description
My project will entail a certain camera, which is a Canon camera. It will require various lenses
that I will try to mess around with to create that UV filter. I will also use separate UV flashlights
and different colored films.(9/28/2022). It will also require playing around with camera settings
and probably installing a blue light flash. I am truly not sure if this will even work, but the plan is
to give it a shot. By installing this flash, I hope for the camera to take pictures in the dark and
also be able to capture and DNA. I want to install the UV into the camera and recreate it to be
used by forensic experts one day. 9/17/2022

Innovation Claim
I think my idea is innovative because it is something that will eventually be useful in the forensic
field. Part of the career in forensics is photography. Ultraviolet lights can capture many body
fluids like semen, spit, and blood. With one shot from this camera, it will show up in a
photographic image without the need of a UV lamp emitting that light. The idea is to embed this
flash into the camera and work with different lenses to see what creates the better outcome. I will
also try maybe adding a UV flashlight to the camera or try different color films to go on the lens
or flash.9/28/2022.
Usage Scenario
A scenario for this idea is a forensic expert has just gotten to the site of a murder. On a normal
day they require the help of forensic photographer. If a murder happens to be at night in an
apartment, where there is blood and other unknown fluids. They will need a blue light and a
camera. On a regular investigation you have one person holding a UV lamp and another that is
the photographer. With this invention it will just require one object which would be the camera
itself with the help of the blue light flash and lens. The camera will already have the special UV
flash and all the photographers will need, is to take the pictures which will automatically show
up in their camera in a blue light form.

Evaluation Criteria
The following questions will identify the successful completion of the project.

 Will this product be available to just forensics?

 Will the lens be available to different cameras?
 Will results be shown right away in camera?
 Does it have to be very dark in order for the lens to work?
 Is the UV lens a long term product? Meaning is it sturdy or is fragile and it will break
easily?

Objectives and Tasks Associated with the Project

 My objective is to take a camera apart and install the UV light into it. I have a camera
that works very well and has detachable and attachable lenses, so this is a great benefit I
have.
 I must do more research in UV itself and see what makes fluids stand out more with that
UV settings.
 Buy a couple of lenses and try to make UV prototype of what the original will be. Try
different blue lights, and see what gives the better results

Description of Design Prototype

 My design is a normal camera but will have various lenses that I will try and make work
with the flash. Most of the lenses it brings will be UV or Blue Light filters you can say.
The lenses will be attachable to the camera and will also come off to attach for regular
photos. Settings will come more into this project as it progresses. Till this day I am trying
to install the blue light into the flash to see if that will work. Once I get that going I will
be exchanging the lenses to see which one gives the better result. So far I have not been
able to bring the prototype to a completion. I ordered different colored film and a bigger
UV flashlight to see how that works. Currently I am awaiting those pieces. 9/28/2022

Evaluation Plan
 The plan for this project idea is to eventually present it in from Forensic Experts. I want
to be able to explain how my project will eventually work and how this can be of great
use to them.
 I would also like to be noticed as the person who came up with an idea that can change
forensic photography.

Project Completion Assessment

What went right?

I think what went right is the fact that there is not really an idea out there like this. It IS being
used out there, but it is used very differently. I am trying to create something that will be more
beneficial and can be used by one person.

What went wrong?

I think what went wrong is that fact that I do not have a lot of hands-on experience. I also have
little to no experience in UV lighting. I am very intrigued by this idea, but I will need to do a lot
of extensive research. My first idea also did not work, so I am trying to pull something out of
nothing by trying new things out. I am just trying to at least get it to work even if it is not perfect.
9/28/2022.

What was learned throughout the process?

What I learned throughout the process is that things are more difficult than they seem. Even
creating something as small as a camera lens or installing new parts into the camera, will not be
easy as I thought.

What would be done differently if you had to do it again?

If I had to it again, I would try to reach out more to forensic experts who know what they are
doing. I would also do more research and watch more videos of UV lighting.
