Answer the following questions using what you've learned from this unit. Write your

responses in the space provided.

1. Mark each of the following graphs as (a) a function, but not one-to-one, (b)

one-to-one function, or (c) not a function. In each case, explain how you know. (1

point each)

A function, but not a one-to-one because it passes the vertical line test

but not the horizontal line test.

A function, but not a one-to-

one because it passes the

vertical line test but not the

horizontal line test.

Not a function because it does

not pass both vertical and

horizontal line

2. Decide whether each of the following is linear or not linear. In each case,

explain your answer. (1 point each)

a.

3x+4y+2=0 is linear because it has no exponents or

absolute value in the equation. It is also linear because

when we turn it into slope-intercept form and graph it,

the line is linear on the graph.

b. This is not a function since the numbers for the y-intercept are not

consistent. The numbers have to be consistent so that it can be

linear. I also noticed that when we graph it, it does not show a

straight consistent line which shows that it is not linear.

c. You have a secret that you tell to one person. Every hour, each of the people

that know the secret tells one person. The number of people who know is N,

and t is the number of hours since you told the first person. Is N a linear

function of t?

N is not a linear function of t because it is not consistent in

which the way the secret is told.

3. Water freezes at 0 Celsius and 32 Fahrenheit. Water boils at 100

Celsius and 212 Fahrenheit.

a. Write degrees Celsius as a linear function of degrees Fahrenheit (1 point).

F=1.8C+32

b. What is the slope of your linear equation? What does it mean? (1 point)

The slope is 1.8. This means that every ninety degrees in F. You go

up 5 degrees in C.

c. What is the y-intercept and what does it mean? (1 point)

B=32. This is because the freezing point is 32F and OC.

6. Match each equation with its possible graph shown below. In each case,

explain the reasoning behind your choice. (1 point each)

a.

a= (i) because all the points are on the y-axis

b.

b=(ill) because the slope is ½ on the graph and equation

c.

C=(v) because the slope is -½ on the graph and equation

d.
