A. THERMOMETERS

The following are the different types of Thermometers:

Normal Ranges of Body Temperature:

Oral : 36.4 to 37.2 degrees Celsius
Rectal :37 to 37.8 degrees Celsius
Axillary: 35.9 to 36.7 degrees Celsius

CLINICAL THERMOMETER
is a small medical thermometer with a small but calibrated range, made
of glass with a bulb on which the mercury stays. This type is no longer
advisable to use because of the mercury content that is dangerous to people.
 may be inserted either into the rectum through the anus
(rectal temperature),
 into the mouth under the tongue (oral or sub-lingual) or
 armpit (axillary temperature).

DIGITAL THERMOMETER is temperature-sensing instruments that are

portable, with a probe, and displays reading in the LCD. This is found to
be safe and very useful nowadays.
a. Oral Type b. Rectal Type c. Axillary Type

EAR OR TYMPANIC THERMOMETER is the thermometer that

registers the heat coming from the eardrum. It is very easy to use. You
just have to place the tip in the ear of a person, press the button and in
a few seconds, the measurement is displayed in the LCD.

INFRARED THERMOMETER also, called LASER THERMOMETER

infers temperature using thermal radiation emitted by the body. It is a
non-contact thermometer that measures temperature from a distance.

Proper Use of a Digital Thermometer (rectum through the anus)

RECTAL THERMOMETER is usually used with infants since it is

considered the most accurate for their age.

1. Wash your hands with soap and water.

2. Take the thermometer in its holder and clean the probe with rubbing alcohol or soap and
then rinse it in cool water.
3. Put a small amount of lubricant (lubricating jelly) at the end of the sensor.
4. Gently slide the probe of the thermometer into the rectum about a half-inch. Do not force
the thermometer into the rectum.
5. Hold the thermometer in place the entire time that you are taking the temperature. Never
leave the patient unattended.
6. When it beeps, read the numbers on the LCD.
7. Wash the probe of the thermometer with soap, water, and rubbing alcohol when you are
done.
8. Put the thermometer’s top cover. Place the thermometer in its holder/container.
9. Record the reading and Wash your hands.

6

Using a Digital Thermometer (mouth)
1. Wash your hands and take the thermometer.
2. Wash the probe with soap and water and sanitize it with alcohol.
3. Let the patient know that you are going to take his temperature orally.
4. Ask the patient to wet his/her lips and pick up his tongue.
5. Place the thermometer under the patient’s tongue on one side of his/her mouth. Ask him/her
to close his/her lips. (You may have to hold the thermometer especially if your patient is sick
and weak enough to even hold the thermometer with his/her lips.)
6. Leave the thermometer in place until the thermometer signal is done. When it beeps, it
signifies that it can be removed.
7. Remove the thermometer carefully and read the temperature on the LCD. Sanitize the tip of
the thermometer with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol. Put the thermometer’s top cover.
Place the thermometer in its container.
8. Record the reading and wash your hands

Using a Digital Thermometer (armpit)

1. Wash your hands and take the thermometer.
2. Wash the probe with soap and water and sanitize it with alcohol.
3. Inform the patient that you are going to take his temperature under the armpit.
4. Place the thermometer under the patient’s armpit. (Hold the thermometer especially if your
patient is very sick and weak that he/she cannot even hold the thermometer with his/her
armpit.)
5. Leave the thermometer in place until the thermometer signal is done. When the
thermometer beeps, it signifies that it can be removed.
6. Remove the thermometer carefully and read the temperature on the LCD. Sanitize the tip of
the thermometer with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol. Put the thermometer’s top cover.
Place the thermometer in its container.
7. Record the reading and wash your hands.
