Formulae :
A)Factors and Multiples :

If a number a divides another number b exactly, then a is a factor of b.

And b is called a multiple of a.

B)Highest Common Factor (H.C.F) or Greatest Common Measure (GCM)

or Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) :

The HCF of two or more than two numbers is the greatest number that
divides each of them exactly.

There are two methods of finding the HCF of a given set of numbers :

1)Factorization Method:

Express each one of the given numbers as the product of prime factors.
The product of least powers of common prime factor gives HCF.

2)Division Method:
Suppose we have to find the HCF of two given numbers. Divide the larger
number by the smaller number. Now , divide the divisor by the remainder.
Repeat the process of dividing the preceding number by the remainder
last obtained till zero is obtained as remainder. The last divisor is the
HCF.

Finding the HCF of more than two Numbers :

Suppose we have to find the HCF of three numbers. Then the HCF of
any two and the third number gives the HCF of three numbers.

Similarly , the HCF of three numbers may be obtained.

C)Least Common Multiple (LCM):

The least number which is exactly divisible by each one of the given
numbers is called their LCM.

1)Factorization Method of Finding LCM:

Resolve each one of given numbers into a product of prime factors. Then
, LCM is the product of highest power of all the factors.

2)Common Division Method (Short cut method ) of finding LCM :

Arrange the given numbers in a row in any order. Divide by a number

which exactly divides at least two of the given numbers and carry forward
the numbers which are not divisible.
Repeat the above process until two of the numbers are divisible by the
same number except 1. The product of the divisors and the undivided
numbers is the required LCM of the given numbers.

D)Product of two numbers = Product of their HCF and LCM

E)Co-primes : Two numbers are said to be co-primes if their HCF is 1.

F)HCF and LCM of fractions :

a.HCF = HCF or numerator / LCM of denominators

b.LCM = LCM of Numerators / HCF of denominators

G)HCF and LCM of Decimal Fractions :

a.In given numbers , make the same number of decimal places by

appending zeros in some numbers, if necessary. Considering these
numbers without decimal points , find HCF or LCM whichever is the case.
Now, in the result, mark off as may decimal places as are there in each of
the given numbers.

H)Comparison of Fraction:

a.Find the LCM of denominators of the given fractions. Convert each of

the fractions into an equivalent fraction with LCM as the denominator, by
multiplying both the denominator and numerator by the same number.
The resultant fraction with the greatest numerator is the greatest.

1) Let M be the greatest number that will divide 1305, 4665 and 6905,
leaving the same remainder in each case. Then sum of the digits in M is:

1) 4 3) 7

2) 2 4) 1

Solution :
M = H.C.F. of (4665 - 1305), (6905 - 4665) and (6905 - 1305)
= H.C.F. of 3360, 2240 and 5600 = 1120.

Sum of digits in M = ( 1 + 1 + 2 + 0 ) = 4

2) Find the greatest number that will divide 43, 91 and 183 so as to leave
the same remainder in each case.

1) 4 3) 7

2) 8 4) 1

Solution :
Calculate the HCF of the differences between all the numbers.

As the number which is Highest Common Factor of the difference will

divide the difference exactly.

And hence, whatever left is the remainder which is equal for each of the
number to be divided.

Required number = H.C.F. of (91 - 43), (183 - 91) and (183 - 43)
= H.C.F. of 48, 92 and 140 = 4.

3) The product of two numbers is 4107. If the H.C.F. of these numbers is

37, then the greater number is:

1) 78 3) 109

2) 56 4) 111

Solution :
Let the numbers be 37a and 37b.
Then, 37a x 37b = 4107

=> ab = 3.

Now, co-primes with product 3 are (1, 3).

So, the required numbers are (37 x 1, 37 x 3) i.e., (37, 111).

=> Greater number = 111.

4) The G.C.D. of 1.08, 0.36 and 0.9 is:

1) 0.201 3) 0.1

2) 1.3 4) 0.18

Solution :
Given numbers are 1.08, 0.36 and 0.90.

=> H.C.F. of 108, 36 and 90 is 18,

=> H.C.F. of given numbers = 0.18.

5) The H.C.F. of two numbers is 23 and the other two factors of their
L.C.M. are 13 and 14. The larger of the two numbers is:

1) 222 3) 108

2) 322 4) 296

Solution :
the numbers are (23 x 13) and (23 x 14).
Larger number = (23 x 14) = 322.

6) Six bells commence tolling together and toll atintervals of 2, 4, 6, 8 10 and 12 seconds
respectively. In 30 minutes, how manytimes do they toll together ?

1) 16 3) 20

2) 12 4) 23

Solution :
L.C.M.of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 is 120.
So,the bells will toll together after every 120 seconds(2 minutes).
In 30 minutes, they will toll
+ 1 = 16 times.
together 30

7) The greatest number of four digits which isdivisible by 15, 25, 40 and 75 is:

1) 9600 3) 8500

2) 9875 4) 8740

Solution :
Greatest number of 4-digits is 9999.
L.C.M. of 15, 25, 40 and 75 is 600.
On dividing 9999 by 600, the remainder is 399.
=> Requirednumber (9999 - 399) = 9600.

8) FindtheH.C.F., Ifthreenumber are in the ratio of 3 : 4 : 5 and their L.C.M. is

2400.
1) 35 3) 45

2) 40 4) 67

Solution :
Let the numbers be 3x, 4x and 5x.
Then, their L.C.M. = 60x.
So, 60x = 2400 or x = 40.
=>The numbers are (3 x 40), (4 x 40) and (5 x 40).
Hence, required H.C.F. = 40.

9) Theleast multiple of 7, which leaves a remainder of 4, when divided by 6, 9,

15and 18 is:

1) 364 3) 250

2) 300 4) 420

Solution :
L.C.M. of 6, 9, 15 and 18 is 90.
Let required number be 90k + 4, which is multiple of7.
Least value of k for which (90k + 4) isdivisible by 7 is k = 4.
=> Required number = (90 x 4) + 4 = 364.

10) If theproduct of two numbers is 2028 and their H.C.F. is 13. The number of
such pairsis

1) 1 3) 2

2) 4 4) 7
Solution :
Let the numbers 13a and 13b.
Then, 13a x 13b = 2028
=> ab = 12.
=> the co-primes with product 12 are (1, 12) and (3, 4).
[ If Two integers a and b are said to be coprimeor relatively prime and
they have no common positive factor other than 1 or,equivalently, if their
greatest common divisor is 1 ]
So, the required numbers are (13 x 1, 13 x 12) and (13 x 3,13 x 4).
Hence, there are 2 such pairs.
