CITIZENSHIP STATUS 1

Assignment 1: Social location

CITIZENSHIP STATUS 2

Social location in Canada

INTRODUCTION

 Social location in Canada is wide spectrum of numerous specific aspects of a person’s

life in Canada. A social location is defined as a combination of various factors such as
gender, race, social class, age, ability, religious, sexual orientation and the geographical
locations. From my personal view point a social location is the life determining factor.
Social location is very powerful because it gives us an identity and it also blocks us from
having the identity a status. The effects of social location has on a person can be depend
on the situations and social have both merits and demerits. Personally, I have
experienced that my life is totally impacted by my social location in Canada. In daily
routine life I have gone through many challenges as I am a student in Canada. There is
number of advantages and disadvantages of my social location in Canada being a
student. I see there is lot or students those are struggling for a citizenship to secure their
future. This is because every student comes with dreams citizen ship status is like boom
for all of us that we are illegible and have many rights as the citizens of Canadian
persons have. Citizenship is the principle privileged from the nationality. It is basically
represent the relation between the individual and the state. In upcoming writing
structure I will discuss about the importance of citizenship status along with its pros and
cons, and how the immigrants are treated on the behalf of my experience.

 Citizenship status is like a identity which give us right to do whatever we want to do

because it is like the we are now equally part of the country as other citizens have
rights. Every year more than 4to5 lakh student are moving to abroad for their further
studies to attain more knowledge and experience. But is not a easy to move to another
country for study it really to adapt a new culture and new people there are lot of
challenges from which we students are gone through I daily routine life. Discrimination
with students is major issue I observed in Canada. Being a student not only in Canada
but in all other states it is not a easy that’s most of the students are prefer to move back
to their home nation after completing their education because lack of support by the
people and families. Almost 51% of students move back to home and other prefer to
settle their life in Canada then they are looking for employment and citizen ship for that
they burn mid night oil for bright future. Students do lot of hard work because it is not a
easy thing to settle in international country. I personally believe that students are
CITIZENSHIP STATUS 3

backbone for the economic status of Canada student are paying taxes to government
which Is utilized for the development of the country.

 My name is Sukhpreet kaur and I am 26 year old women who came Canada for studies
to achieve success. I have citizenship of India; basically I belong to Punjab which is
situated in northern part of the India. As i belongs to Sikh religion, my lifestyle is quite
simple daily i had my school and after that i have some tuition classes for my
preparation and i also visits to holy temple go get some peace and relaxation. I had my
academics in India, and then i had decided pursue my further studies in Canada.
furthermore, to achieve this goal i had start preparing myself for IELTTS exam I crack my
IELTS within a month and I had applied for Canada study visa and by the grace of God
and my hard work and dedication I got my visa approved. This decision of my life is very
important decision to grow my life in Canada.
 Being a citizen of India it is my status which allocates me to have every right and value in
society. Citizenship status gives us many benefits such as free medical facilities in
government hospitals education, facilities and services to all citizens. But when I visit
Canada as a international student I never thought it will be very difficult. To be honest I
had face many challenges when i visit Canada during first month i don't have any living
space and no one there to help me. I experienced a prejudice there because some
citizens of Canada are not giving us a space for living because i am Indian student, then i
find some Indian girls those are also students they help me to leave with them with
sharing of expenses
 Adapting to new Country and culture is really tough and challenging. Lacks of social
support add the feelings of alienation and homesickness among international students.
Personally when i was looking for job i daily visit to job providers agencies where the
behavior they are dealing with students was very rude. *Bell R Webster* securing a job
in Canada as a student is very tough job it is much difficult then I think before. No doubt
Canada is a rich country and well known for being a rich in jobs as well but securing a
job for students is still very difficult, my most of friends those who are doing jobs in
various sectors are dealings with many difficulties such as low paying. Securing a job is
very important task in Canada it will help you deal with expenses such grocery,
transport, fees, and rent.
CITIZENSHIP STATUS 4

 Canada is been the favorite destination among many immigrants, currently more than eight
million people immigrants with work permits or permanent residence are living in Canada nearly
21.5 percent of the total Canadian population. Canadian government also introduced a refugee
protection act from 2022. This is the great initiative to save people those who are feeling unsafe
on their nations.
 Benefits of citizenship status in Canada, it has been clear according to rules that most PR cards
are only valid for five years. During this 5 years there are many possible ways with students can
apply for the citizenship card. To become citizen of Canada permanent residence need to be
physically present in Canada for almost 1095 days out of the five years before student is going to
apply for the citizenship in Canada. Once we become a citizen of Canada no need to renew your
citizenship status. Citizenship card is valid for lifetime.
 I observe over the period that until student get a permanent residence card they have to face
many challenges which is really tough, our society never treat us a student, however they think
we are wrong doers, the why they are behaving is very dominant they are paying less expecting
more work because being a student their they cannot say no to work because without work
student to manage their fees, and other important expenses. Student don’t get an enough time
to sleep they are doing overtime work this all struggle because of the money. Lack of support by
society is the principle issues that student move back to their countries.
 In addition to this when I was start working I never get my accurate pay rate as we are signed I
had work had in many places to manage my expenses it really tough job for me to working in
warehouses and restaurants I had manage my time for studies as well in morning I have shifts
than classes and in night I am completing my shifts. In spite of such hard work job provider
agencies never give me a accurate pay as they promised because they know that we are come
here a being a student and don’t have anyone here to help so they take advantage. Thus it
really de motivates us but what we can do there is no other chance job is important for fees and
living in such a rich country. However if I have a citizenship status it never happens with me I
have right to raise my voice I can submit a complaint about this. So overall I believe 3to4 years
are really hard to leave in Canada without the support from the family and society.

Disadvantages of Canadian citizenship:-

 It is the major drawback that some people are come in under refuge act 2022 under this law
they are not eligible to dual citizenship it means they will never go back to their mother country,
it means citizens of some countries may lose their citizenship, which may be a big difficulty or
may not be also. Not all the persons those are living with citizenship card lose citizenship upon
becoming a Canadian. Only some holders need to vary about refuges may encounter this issue.

(Griner, S. B., C. A. Vamos, E. L. Thompson, 2017. “Journal of Interpersonal Violence” Vol 35 issue 23-24)

 It’s totally true that all form of discrimination can create environment where people
disrespected and eventually unsafe. Discrimination is the major reason that which become an
CITIZENSHIP STATUS 5

sort of obstacle to full participation which may hinder the success of students( Asquith et
al.2019;Levchak2013), based on recently discussion transgender people those gender identity
fits beyond the tradition men and women have gained prominence (Dugan et al.2012;). thus
due to all these reasons, discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation is the
postsecondary setting represent an important topic for research which need very immediate
action to be taken to help students to grab out them from the stress of discrimination, either it
is bases on gender, sexual orientation or the class.

(Asquith et al.2019; Levchak2013, Vol25 no.3),

(Dugan et al.2012 DC Journal of College Student Development. Vol. 53, no. 5;)

Gender discrimination and sexual orientation were asked by the SSPPS, this was a survey which main
objective is to gain the information from the representative of Canadian. As a result the findings reveal
that almost 8% or women’s and 5% of men were not actually act like man or women is supposed to act
in the 12 month preceding that survey (cotter and savage 2019). This percentage revels that women
students are continue to experience higher rates of discrimination behavior as they move into
employment sector.

Benefits which make me hard worker to complete my study and get citizenship of Canada.

 It opens better job opportunities absolutely there will be a better job opportunities will open for
me I able to do a government job as well that require a citizenship as well as some other jobs
which have some security clearances
 Right to vote and participate in political office
 Citizenship status gives a right to vote in both provincial and federal elections. In addition to this,
as a Canadian citizen you can hold a political office and It open a opportunity to stand in election
for your constituents on some very crucial such as education, health and poverty.
 The biggest advantage for me is that with Canadian passport, with Canadian passport I will able
to travel to many countries because I am very fond of travelling to different palaces so after
getting Canadian citizenship I will definitely travel to the other countries for my exploration and
experience. Canada offer a dual citizenship which means you can retain the citizenship of your
country and also obtain citizenship in Canada.
 As I have dream to open my company in Canada and offer a employment to all fresher to get
jobs and help them to earn money so that they never feel discriminated. This dream will
become possible if get a citizenship because there is lots of investment is required. This
requirement is possible from bank loans and citizenship is important to get loans.

Conclusion
 In a nut shell I it has been clearly observed that there is lot of discrimination with students in
Canada. Which affect the future of the students due such discrimination students feel
CITIZENSHIP STATUS 6

disappointed, and dominated. Citizenship is the great solution which erases the discrimination
which people have with international students and immigrants. Government must ensure some
sort of programs and help centers where students can get help students to get work. Everything
must be solved by the time it important to change the thinking of the people those are
discriminate the students. Citizenship status is a great opportunity which give equal rights and
confident to leave a life freely as other citizens living.
