FLYING DISC –SUMMARY 2-


Flying disc is one of the multiple recreational activities that we can
practice in our spare time.

HISTORY

Students at Yale University (Boston, Massachussets) started to play


Frisbee games.

Curiosities -It was first called Wham O´s Pluto Platter-

INTRODUCTION

It is a competitive, non-contact team game

It is about throwing and catching the disc continually without


holding it more than 10 seconds and without running with it.

It was created in 1967 by students at Columbia High School in


Maplewood, New Jersey.

Objective: to score a goal by catching a thrown disc while in the end zone
of the field.

Ultimate Frisbee´s spirit is based on self-officiating (no referees),


sportsmanship, fair play, honesty, player respect and the joy of playing.

RULES

Players:

There are 2 teams of 7 players.

The players are called: handlers or quarterbacks (3), middle receivers or


mids (2) and long receiver or longs (2).

Field: the play area is a rectangle divided up into 3 zones: two end zones
and one infield.

Start of play: the game begins with a throw-off.

Length of game: there are 2 halves of 24 minutes each.

Scoring: each goal is worth 1 point. To score a goal: an offensive team´s


player catches a thrown disc in the end zone.

Disc movement:

• You have 10 seconds to throw the disc


• You can´t run with the Frisbee

Possession change:

• If the disc is intercepted, blocked, dropped or goes out-of-bounds,


defending team gets the possession.

Fouls: any player can call a foul (no referees). These are the main fouls:

• Walking or running while holding the disc.


• Making any body contact with an opposing player.

• Stand less than 1 meter apart from your designated player.

EQUIPMENT

Any type of Frisbee is suitable for school purposes.

Backhand beginner:

Option 1
• The thumb is on top of the disc
• The index finger is placed along the
outside rim of the disc
• The middle finger is extended toward the
center of the disc
• The remaining two fingers grip under the
rim

Option 2 –provides more power-

• The thumb is on the disc


• The index finger is placed along the
outside rim of the disc
• The middle, ring and little fingers grip
under the rim.

Backhand power:

• The thumb is on top of the Frisbee


• The rest of fingers grip the rim tightly

Forehand beginner:

• The thumb is on top of the Frisbee


• The index finger is extended towards the
center of the disc for support.
• The middle finger is along the inside of
the rim
• The remaining two fingers are clenched
toward the palm

Forehand power:

• The thumb is on top of the disc


• The index and middle fingers together
are pressed hard against the rim
• The remaining two fingers are clenched
toward the palm

C-Catch or one-hand catch:

• Form a C with your thumb and fingers


• Close your fingers to grasp the disc
• High Catch: thumbs down - disc is received at the chest or above

• Low Catch: thumbs up – disc is received below the chest.

Sandwich, pancake or two-hand catch:

• One hand is on top and the other on the bottom

TACTICS

How to play defense

• Stay with your designated man


• Try to hinder him/her from receiving the Frisbee.
• If your opponent does catch the Frisbee, force him/her to do a bad
throw or block the pass.
• Run and stay with your assigned opponent, and not allow him/her
to get open.

How to play offense

After catching the Frisbee:

• Relax because you have 10 seconds to throw.


• Look up the field and wait for a teammate to get open, and only
throw when you think you can make a good throw.

When teammate has the Frisbee:

• Either try to get open for a pass or stay out of the way.
• Watch the Frisbee and try to anticipate where your teammates will
be running.
• Run as fast as you can until you get the Frisbee, unless it would
interfere with the play.
