Overview DEFINITION OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES In general, the Social Sciences refer to academic disciplines that study society, their interaction and cultural development. It is a field of study which includes economics, political science, history, law and geography, among others different from the natural sciences. The Applied Social Sciences, also examine society and their interrelationships with the society, and is linked with psychology and sociology. It enables student taking these courses the best possible launching pad for a future career. Comparatively, both deal with society, the individuals and their cultural practices. The former works on the theoretical aspect while the latter focuses on the practical aspect. This Course affords students opportunities to visualize which career path they could possibly venture on or pursue as they go up the ladder of education. It provides the students with a bird’s eye view of the degrees in Counseling, Social Work, Journalism and Social Science. It is in essence a career orientation for each student. LEARNING OUTCOMES: The learners are expected to: Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the basic concepts of counseling; Identify the goals and scope of counseling; Demonstrate comprehension of the principles of counseling; and Discuss the core values of counseling; and Prepare a group presentation of a situation in which practitioners of counseling work together to assist individuals, groups, or communities involved in difficult situations. MODULE 2: PROFESSIONALS & PRACTITIONERS IN COUNSELING Overview The learners are expected to: 1. Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the professionals and practitioners in counselling; 2. Show understanding of the roles and functions of counsellors; 3. Identify specific work areas in which counsellors work; 4. Identify career opportunities for counsellors; 5. Value rights, responsibilities, and accountability; 6. Distinguish between ethical and unethical behaviors among counsellors; and 7. Undertake participant observation (e.g., a day in a life of a counsellor) to adequately document and critique their roles, functions, and competencies. MODULE 3: CLIENTELE & AUDIENCES IN COUNSELING Overview The learners are expected to: Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the clientele and audiences in counseling; Identify specific work areas in which counselors work; and Describe the clientele and audience of counseling MODULE 4: SETTINGS, PROCESSES, METHODS & TOOLS IN COUNSELING Overview The learners are expected to: Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the settings, processes, methods and tools in counselling; Identify the settings in which counsellors are found; and Illustrate the different methods and processes involved in undertaking counselling. MODULE 5: COUNSELING SERVICES, PROCESSES & METHODS Overview The learners are expected to: Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the counseling services; and Illustrate the different methods and processes involved in undertaking counseling. MODULE 6: THE DISCIPLINE OF SOCIAL WORK Overview The learners are expected to: Demonstrate understanding of the disciplines of social work; Identify the goals and scope of social work; Demonstrate comprehension of the principles of social work; Discuss the core values of social work; and Participate in a group presentation about particular situations in which practitioners of social work are commonly confronted with. MODULE 10: DISCIPLINE OF COMMUNICATION Overview The learners are expected to: 1.Demonstrate understanding about disciplines of communication; 2.Identify the goals and scope of communication; 3.Demonstrate comprehension of the principles of communication; 4.Discuss the core values of communication; 5.Describe the elements and levels of the communication processes; and 6.Demonstrate a high level of understanding of the basic concepts of communication through a group presentation of a situation in which practitioners of communication work together to assist individuals, groups, or communities involved in difficult situation. MODULE 11: PROFESSIONALS & PRACTITIONERS IN COMMUNICATION Overview The learners are expected to: Demonstrate comprehension of the professionals and practitioners in communication; Undertake participant observation (e.g., a day in a life of a communicator/ journalist) to adequately document and critique their roles, functions, and competencies Show understanding of the roles and functions of communicators and journalists; Identify specific work areas in which communicators and journalists work; Identify career opportunities for communicators and journalists; and Value rights, responsibilities, and accountability. MODULE 12: FUNCTIONS OF APPLIED SCIENCES Overview The learners are expected to: 1. Demonstrate understanding of the functions of applied social sciences; 2. Explain each of the functions of applied social sciences; and 3. Identify situations that would require or necessitate the performance of the various functions in local/Philippine settings 4. Assess objectively through an individual project how the functions of the applied social sciences have been fulfilled in any of the following: case study of a counselee case study on integrative social work MODULE 13: EFFECTS OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES PROCESSES Overview The learners are expected to: Demonstrate understanding of the effects of applied social sciences; Assess objectively through an individual project how the functions of the applied social sciences have been fulfilled in any of the following: case study of a counselee case study on integrative social work Participate in a one-day exposure trip to an existing development program and write a sincere reflection report on the effects of the processes on the clientele
